What do people do?  **** in them?!
Some varieties of "****" are normal activities to undertake on a toilet seat, others less so.

In 40 years I've only had to buy one toilet (nine years ago), and that was because the old one developed a hairline crack in the cistern.

Never had to buy a separate toilet seat, and certainly never bought replacement hinges!

It depends on if you are a stander up or sitter down afterward.  Sitting down can mean twisting on the hinges.

£30 on hinges? Jesus I've not spent half that for a new toilet seat.
The £30 I paid was from a seller on ebay who purchased the wrong ones and couldn't get a refund.
Most retailers wanted in the region of £70 for them!

How long would you expect toilet seat hinges to last before they become tarnished and bits of the chrome coating flake off?
I got lumbered with cleaning the toilet today and noticed the chrome coating of the hinges was starting to flake off.
The toilet seat was bought in March this year.
Plastic seat with chrome coloured paint?
Or are they proper metal hinges that have been properly chromed?

A lot will depend on what you are cleaning them with.
Our toilet is too close to the wall.(small bathroom so it is what it is) So people using it naturally turn out slightly due to the radiator a few inches along the wall from the toilet. This puts strain on the hinges.
After replacing a few I got this one which seems well made and fits the toilet 'better' than previous ones. Removable for cleaning too which is really handy

Yes, been there done that too.  We did buy a £70 set of Roca soft close hinges as I had contacted Roca to moan about the original ones only lasting 4 years and didn't hear from them.  I bought the new ones and then a month or so later got sent a Roca replacement set free of charge direct from their factory.  They did read my letter!   This was all back in 2009.  I haven't had cause to change them again so the freebie set are still collecting dust in the loft.  I did enquire about a new loo seat about the same time and that was in the region of £80 without the soft close hinges.  Shockingly expensive.
