Council tax and electoral roll. Are they linked?

Options
Ok so I want to apply for a mortgage (first time buyer) and I have good credit rating as per the credit file however I'm not on the electoral roll. Now for me to get a mortgage I have to be on the electoral roll but I'm slightly concerned about the council tax as I will need to register at my parents home address  as all of my bank accounts etc are registered to this address.

So if I register on the electoral roll will the council automatically pick up my name for council tax or are the files kept separately? I was reading on the Internet that council's do data matching. What I don't want to do is to effect affect my parents council tax bill
So is it safe to register on the electoral roll?

What things do I have to be careful of?

Why would you impact your parents council tax bill? Do they pay the normal full rate anyway? If not, you wont impact it one bit, although I dont know what impact it would have if they receive various benefits/credits. Ask them if they pay the normal full whack or not.

Electoral rolls are maintained by local authorities.....the same local authorities who look after council tax. So yes they are linked heavily.

Why have you not changed the addresses of your bank accounts? This would be an easier solution long term.

    Thanks for your comment Bradley
Thing is the students so they currently pay nothing. So if I was to register and roll with the council make me liable to pay council tax?
I haven't really had a permanent home adress as I really move around

    Kind regards

Your parents are both students? Strange, but OK. In which case yes, they probably currently pay nothing, the minute you put your name on the electoral roll there the council tax more than likely is reassessed.   You can hardly prove you dont live there to dispute it either when all your bank accounts are still addressed there.

I suggest you add yourself at your current address and change your bank account address there as well.

You may also have a job explaining to brokers/lenders why you have never been on the electoral roll for a few years (or at all), it doesnt look good. How old are you?

A bit confusing.  I presume you are paying council tax at the property you are currently staying in. If so change your bank account details to there. They will be changed again when you buy.

I left home a few years go and I guess my Parents removed me from The electoral roll but I never changed the adress of my bank accounts and everything was available online.
And I've just been living with friends and moving around

  • That isnt going to stand you in great stead for a mortgage application to be brutally honest.

Yh i agree so what's the best cost effective solution?
  • Add yourself at the address you are now and change all your accounts to that address also.
  • The thing is I'm couch surfing at the min which makes it hard but I think I have enough savings to start renting. Do you think if I started to rent and then change my addresses to that place would allow me to get a mortgage? How long would I need to rent for?

I have no idea. But if you arent even on the electoral roll I would suggest getting a mortgage would be extremley difficult.
