Failed MOT when paying for service and MOT

The garage must MOT car as it is when it comes in to the garage. Avoid this by booking service first one day and MOT a later day. Inconvenient but avoids risk.0

My MOT guy told me to go and fetch a bulb from the cupboard, bulb failed during the test.. No failure or advisory as it
passed during the lights check, failed as they drove it upto the emissions machine.
He didnt want me driving out with a failed bulb though, that would not have looked good.
He has also adjusted the headlights without failing or advisories. Bonnets open the adjuster is right
there he says little things like that brings the customers back.

As part of the MOT test they are actually supposed to attempt to adjust them before they are allowed to fail them so if he did just fail it or give an advisory without adjustment that would be against MOT rules.forgotmyname said:My MOT guy told me to go and fetch a bulb from the cupboard, bulb failed during the test.. I didn't know that, just assumed it would be something any half-decent mechanic would do in the name of good customer service rather than being an actual rule.Must admit, my mechanic is the same. If it's "failed" on a blown bulb, screenwash bottle empty, headlight aim, that sort of thing, he'll always just fix the fault and pass it, no advisories and no fail recorded on the history. No idea if that's against the rules or not, but to my mind, just replacing a bulb and not bothering to record a fail and retest is very much "in the spirit of the law if not the letter of the law" :-)

If it has failed on a blown bulb then hopefully the tester will explain this to you because this really is something you should check before you take it in for a MOT test and actually should check fairly often otherwise your potentially driving around for 12 months with a blown bulb in between MOT tests.Ebe_Scrooge said:Takmon said:

If the garage do the service and then the MOT, you would expect any issues to be identified at the service and the owner given the opportunity to rectify before the MOT.But there are many things on the MOT which would not be part of a routine service.E.g. a relative's car failed because it had a temporary fuel filler cap. That would never be looked at in a service.

there he says little things like that brings the customers back.I wasn’t aware of that either. The two pics are from my sons MOT last year;...a single FAIL due to headlamp adjustment followed by an immediate PASS
Presumably?? the headlamp adjustment was rectified before the mechanic completed the online MOT paperwork so if what you say is correct why would he bother recording a FAIL ?...a bit puzzling.
The car was only in the garage about 35mins.
