Early cancellation of BT broadband contract?

My BT broadband contract is due to expire on 22nd November. Can I cancel the contract without penalty before this date in order to start a new provider?

No - your contract is to 22nd November and BT will expect you to pay right up to the end even if you change suppliers between now and then although it will probably only amount to one months payment as we are over halfway through October already

No.  There is no switching window like you see in gas and electricity.  You can leave whenever you want, subject to penalty fees, which only cease to be applied (in your case) from 22nd November.
However that being said, if you're happy to stay with BT you may be able to start a new contract with them without a penalty, but it sounds like you've found a better deal somewhere else?
  • Ok, thank you for the replies. Yes, I have found several better deals.
My next question is this. BT have a £20 refund scheme if my broadband scheme dips under their guaranteed minimum download rate of 37mbps. I have done speedchecks through the BT speedchecker (42.9 mbps) and Broadband Choices which I found via MSE (35.5mbps)

Why would there be such a discrepancy between the 2 results and which one should I trust?

You checked the speed via ethernet cable or WiFi?
    WiFi speeds are always slower.

Both checks done via WiFi, still don't know why there would be a difference of 7.4mbps between the 2 results.

Because the BT one is an app that checks the speed at the router, broadband choices etc goes through the WiFi. BT won't guarantee the WiFi speed, only the speed at the router.
