Unexpected credit - can my bank say where it's from?

Update on this. My bank gave me the sort code and account it came from, which is a Loyds account. Rang Loyds and they told me the account is used by Halifax insurance services, and as I have insurance via them I'm assuming it's some sort of reimbursement.SE20 said:
I had wondered that as I used to have a mortgage through the Halifax but paid it off a decade ago. I happen to have insurance through them, but can't think why they'd give me money. But maybe they've written to me and I just haven't seen the letter (am abroad at the moment).jonesMUFCforever said:Halifax Home - may this something to do with home insurance>? Is your home insurance linked with your mortgage?
But some strange things about the whole affair: First, Lloyds seemed to already know the details of the transaction (I simply told them my bank's name, plus the Lloyds sort/account nos.). Surely a corporate like a Halifax insurance arm would have loads of transactions going through their accounts, so how was the call centre person able to identify which transaction I was talking about? And secondly, why would a Halifax insurance arm be using Lloyds and not Halifax's own banking system?0 -
I don't think Halifax are a full scheme member. I suspect you are talking about and Agency account sort code.
Just because the sort code starts with 30 does not mean it is Lloyds owned anymore, Agency sort codes can move between banks if the sponsorship changes.
Very surprised Lloyds gave you any information .30+ years working in banking0 -
Because Halifax Insurance isn't really Halifax, it's Lloyds:SE20 said:

"Halifax Home Insurance is underwritten by Lloyds Bank General Insurance Limited."

Perhaps the call centre knows about it as it's received lots of calls on this subject? Anyway, as these stories often end and rather than wasting even more energy speculating on it, I'd wait a few days to see whether something to arrives in the post.1
