Unexpected credit - can my bank say where it's from?

Just looked at my account and there's a credit I don't recognise. Is a bank able to give me the source of the payment? All I have to go on is the description of the transaction which doesn't tell me much (though it could be someone else's misdirected mortgage payment because there's a reference no. beginning "MOR").
Edit: I have messaged my bank, but am not confident they'll respond meaningfully soon.

If you post the whole reference on here someone may be able to work it out from the format.

When I had a credit I didn't realise (though I later figured out) they couldn't figure out where it came from and didn't have any more information than me (so they said, anyway)  - seems odd given how everything else electronic is tracked.

For free, non-judgemental debt advice, try: Stepchange or National Debtline. Beware fee charging companies with similar names.
  • Phone the bank, tell them you don't recognise it, they can't do anything until the sender realises their mistake and requests it back.

Keep the money to one side, either in the account it was sent to or move it to a savings account (you are allowed to do that and keep the interest), do not spend it and just wait.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

I had wondered that as I used to have a mortgage through the Halifax but paid it off a decade ago. I happen to have insurance through them, but can't think why they'd give me money. But maybe they've written to me and I just haven't seen the letter (am abroad at the moment).

Perhaps they were charging you interest on something that they should not have?

You'll most likely get the full answer when you arrive home.
