Broadband Notice Period- Leaving Plusnet
So many times in the past i have switched broadband providers apparently too late - i call up my provider and they tell me "well you shouldve give us XX days notice" and then proceed to gouge my eyes out charging me a month at a super-inflated out of contract rate. I have even tried to switch with ahead of time and been charged with breaking contract! Also the providers NEVER accept phone calls ahead of time saying I want to discontinue broadband at the end of my contract, they want you to call up on some magical day or they'll keep rinsing your wallet.
So this time I don't want to make any mistakes and have plenty of time to prepare. My contract with Plusnet expires in the new year. I will be leaving them because they have messed up my contract so many times and dont want to give them a penny more than i have to!!!!
So when do i call up or execute the switch online through MSE?
Grrrrrr broadband providers

ISP swaps are now gaining provider led you do not phone PN and cancel .Start switch 30 days before expiry of contract .0

I have never called them to say I’m leaving.I take note of the day my contract with them expires. Then when I’m arranging the new service, there’s an option to choose when it begins. I choose the contract expiry date or just after, and get billed by my previous provider up to then. I’ve just done this from Plusnet to Vodafone with no issues.0

Seems to be some sort of secret as to when you can arrange a broadband switch without penalty, I've looked online but even Ofcom won't say, logically there's a 14 day cooling off period when nothing happens and the switch then takes around 3 days, so I would sign up to another provider around 15 days before the end of contract, well that's what I did last time anyway, I would have thought that Ofcom would follow Ofgem and set the number of days before the end of your contract when you can switch without penalty.

These are two separate watchdogs and what works in one sector won't necessarily work in the other. The 49 day thing for gas and electric was primarily because it can take up to that length of time to switch in that sector. That isn't the case with telephony, where the bulk of the delay is the cooling off period. The actual switch can be done in one day, unless you're having a new number or moving to/from cable or there are other unforeseen issues.0
