Changing quote but the job is the same

Hi everyone,
would love your opinion on this.
i recently had a quote to supply and install artificial turf in my garden. When i first called i explained the size required and the state of my garden that would have to be put right before laying grass. I was told on the phone it would be about £700-800 but they would have to see it first. Great.
I set up an appointment for them to come round and I was given a quote on the day, both verbally and in writing that it would be £1500. If i did the preliminary work it would be £!200. Super. I told them I would be getting a few more quotes. They said ok.
i contacted another local company who said they couldn't do it any cheaper than £2200. And that was them "sticking their neck out". they said no one would be cheaper and asked if i had other quotes. being an honest person i said yes for £1500. they asked who from, i told them. they said they knew that person and in no way could it be that cheap. they said if the boss knew he would be furious. i asked them not to meddle in the quote i received. they promised they wouldn't.
now i've received an email from the initial company to say the job is not as straight forward as they had initially quoted (i don't know why. i've not changed the parameters of the work needed doing) and that they need to come around for a second look.
i highly suspect that the second company has gone to the first to do some kind of price fixing between them.
is there anything i can do? i'm so annoyed by both companies i don't want either of them to do the job now even if it costs me double.

"is there anything i can do? " yes there is - ask around ( family, friends, work colleagues ... ) , get couple of more quotes from slightly further afield ( for a fairly small job that yours seems to be -one man band gardener / landscaper might be better than a bigger company with advertising, receptionist , fancy glossy brochures and all other extra costs. ), do not discuss any previous quote with anyone new and chose who you like, you know you don't HAVE to stick with someone because they quoted you first ? Just say you changed you might and do not want them any more ( polite way of saying - you shafted me so on your bike... ).....1

Let them come back and get them to clearly explain what they missed the first time around, ask lots and lots of questions, make them explain in detail in front of you any additional costs. Don't let them leave and say they will email an updated quote until they've explained any changes face to face.......
Then get other quotes.

it seems they made a mistake when first quoting.
and you want to hold them to that price and get them to carry on with the job, even though if it's underpriced it probably won't be done properly?
