I am really very sorry to hear this and to be honest, it's something I would never have thought about if I was selling a car. You can look back and think you've been a fool but honestly, I'm sure many of us would have been just as trusting as you were. That's because we'd never do anything like that, it's nothing to beat yourself up about.

I really hope they catch the thieves and that you either get your car back or can be compensated.

Thanks a lot for the kind words, it really isn't something anyone should have to deal with. It's just not something that would have ever crossed my mind, for it to happen this way, as being comprehendible. The ultimate outcome for all of this would be them to get their comeuppance because they all deserve it.

    Thanks again

Thanks for all your help and support - Good news, the claim has been accepted providing that the V5 and picture of the keys is verified and accepted (no reason why it won't be).

So I'm glad I can get over this part of the whole ordeal at least.
That’s good news but this thread is a good reminder about the importance of reading their policy small-print.
Coincidentally, I’ve just changed my car insurer to LV and was reading through their documents last night.  They explicitly state they will not pay a claim for theft when it is a result of fraud or deception when selling a vehicle.

It wouldn't surprise me if the car will turn up eventually as it is common for cars like this to be stolen for use in other crimes, then they are abandoned either totally destroyed or in surprisingly good condition. Friends/family who are traffic police officers once told me thefts of vehicles like Golf R's, S3s, M1/2/3s and AMG A Class were quite common, as was their recovery in as before condition but they'd been used in burglary, further auto theft or drug crimes.

Good luck with the claim, what an awful situation you found yourself in. Do you have GAP insurance to make sure the payout is hopefully as large as possible?

I really hope that insurance company can get this sorted for you. I put my car up for sale in West London few ago and out of all the calls I got, 90% were from the similar sort of scam I believe.
They would ask you this as the first question, you have 2 keys.. and so on.
Is there anything working with the cat mechanically... What’s your location as they wanted to come and view the car. I’d always tell them to meet me at a public place or once l said I’ll come to you then they don’t bother.
There’s lot of car adverts going on everyday on gumtree & auto trader and imagine how many people are getting scammed by this gang.
I’d report to police and not online but go to the police station and tell them about this and tell them to investigate.
They will be able to pick up other car’s registration plate from nearby CCTV somewhere.
If car was was on finance or if you had paid any part payment for the car by cred card then you could involve finance company or make a claim under section 75 with your credit card company.
    Good luck!
If i was buying a car and the seller wanted to meet me somewhere other than the address on the V5C i would be wary that they are doing something dodgy and the car isn't actually theirs and that's why they didn't want me to meet them there.

What basis is there for a Section 75 claim? that would only apply if there is an issue when the car was purchased.

I'm always quite critical of mistakes people make when things could have easily been avoided, but in your case i would say you have done nothing wrong. You were in a situation where your selling a car so you have to let the potential buyer test drive it and there were three guys in the area who had the sole intention of stealing that car from you. So one of the best outcomes was for you to be unharmed and for the insurance company to reimburse you which seems to be what has happened, which is good.

There are some situations where avoiding harm to yourself is more important that prevent a material loss and this was one of them.
