Cancel BT for cable?

I think I've been stupid. I have just moved into a new house and so called BT this morning to activate the line as I wanted broadband however I have now found out that I can only get 2.5M ADSL so have decided to go for cable. However when I was on the phone to BT this morning they said I am bound in to a 1 year contract with them. I don't want to be paying for BT and Cable, is there anything I can do?

    I'm having exactly the same problem. Just moved into a new apartment. I want to go on TalkTalk broadband and phone. I need BT to activate my line, which is £150 ish. TalkTalk then say that you will have to pay BT £70 cancellation fee.
    I'm afraid this looks like the only way round it.

    Libra, it takes at least 2 days to activate a BT line and you can cancel until mid-day the day before it goes live. So if you ordered today ring up and get it cancelled NOW!

    Karl, Talk talk could switch the line on for you, they just refuse to.

    No, they pressure you to do it as they can't be arsed!
