I have just made a transaction on the telephone banking system, after the transaction was completed the teller asked me to confirm my address and date of birth saying they were confirming my details were correct. is this normal practice? Thank you

What number did you ring? Did you get all the normal menus etc etc?1
-
Yes I used the usual number, everything else the same except I have never been asked for those details before..0

Usually I get asked stuff like that BEFORE the bank will let me transact. If you're satisfied that you called a genuine number and you weren't pressured into making the transfer then I don't think there is anything to worry about.1

Thank you for your replies. I will keep an eye on my account and question the call when I next am able to go into the bank.0

I appreciate that you were probably taken by surprise at the questions and didn't have time to think about it. Looking at it after the event, though, one way of dealing with it would have been to ask the teller to say what address and DOB they had on record and you would say whether or not these were correct. They obviously believed they were speaking to the account holder (or they wouldn't have made the transaction), so no data protection arguments come into play. Your address can change, so I understand why they might want to check what they had was still correct, but how often do people change their DOB?!1

Very many of the banks use DOB as one verifying fact. Even the automated services require this in the 6 digit format. Often they like: best friend's name, name of first pet, make of first car.......etc

And for even more security the answers to questions such as your pet's name or your mother's maiden name do not have to be correct - for example I have a standard reply for my mother's maiden name which is in fact not my mother's maiden name!1

Thanks for all the advice everybody. Curious though, because as Katiehound suggested, I had already given this on automated call before being put through to person.0

Is the name of this bank a big secret ??
