We also have a C30, as well as 2 bigger Volvos.
Agree the C30 cabin is a nice place to be. Also agree with the other suggestion of a V40, a petrol may be a good move as diesels and DPFs don't lend themselves to short journeys very well.
  • +1 on the V40. I had a 15 plate R design D4 for 3 year, 70k miles, it was comfortable, nippy and well spec'd. I'd have another one

Trade both of them against a car that meets the majority of your needs. They are all much of a muchness nowadays cabin & equipment wise.

Volvo now needs money on repairs so considering getting rid ( without concealing faults ).

    That is a bit underhand
    Have you misread that?
    Yes he did
  • Many thanks for additional comments.  The C30 needed expensive repairs which exceeded market value.  Disappointing but let go for scrap value.  My concern with newer cars are all the so called improvements such as auto braking which are great when new and working properly.  However when aging I've read of dangerous incidents and, less important, significant expense.
Anybody suggest the time when cars became so complicated.  Not wanting a starting handle !!

I had a Passat B6 55 plate 1.6 FSi. Great car apart from the electric handbrake. Costly to fix and because of this made me switch to Skoda Octavia. We have manual and automatic cars, why can manufacturers not make versions of both cars with electric and manual handbrakes?

What difference does that make? Filling my car with diesel exceeds market value of my car. It's still normally cheaper to repair than to buy a new car. All cars need repairs. Market value of the car is totally irrelevant.

Well...I remember being frustrated when I found that the wiring for the rear wiper on my 1982 Metro involved a printed circuit rather than actual wires that I could fix... And then my 1993 Land Rover had the fuel cut-off as a solenoid rather than pull stop... Nowadays I find I even need to use plug-in diagnostics to reset stuff after disconnecting the battery! I'm afraid there is no magic point at which cars became too complicated. I suspect, however, that my current vehicle is more likely to die a cpu/software death than a mechanical one!
  • Many thanks for additional comments.  Any car needs filling with fuel to go.  When you have to spend more than the car is worth to keep it going then there is a decision to make.
I will avoid anything with electric hand brake and auto braking.  Probably need to be pre 2015 to find anything.
