PAYG 1p Mobile

Just a warning to fully understand conditions when you sign up to any deal. I didn't and now stand to lose almost £30 of credit to 1p mobile (not their fault!) because their deal involves paying a minimum of £10 every 3 months. I'm not using my phone enough to need all this credit. Now, having read Martins excellent article I realise that I should be with "three". I won't use the credit I have in a month of Sundays, so, when I close my account, goodbye £30!  Please note this is not the fault of 1p mobile.

    Donate your credit balance .
  • Did you not read the t&c when signing up.........you can use balance to top up
go to your top up history
"If your SIM has not been topped-up as per our 120-day top-up requirement, rather than disconnect your service and if you have a large phone credit we will use £10 of your phone credit to extend your usage for another 120 days. All your remaining credit will be rolled over. (Alternative amounts and durations may be agreed via 1pMobile Customer Services)"

On the order page you have to tick a box that reads "I agree to the 1pMobiles terms & conditions of service including the requirement to top-up at least once every 120 days.  Without ticking that box you can't place the order.
120 days is pretty much 4 months not 3. If you signed up for the 1 year offer you will not need to top for the first year because for each £10 you add to your account as a top-up they extend your next top-up date by 120 days. If you sign up with £30 they round the 360 days up to 1 year. Also they have option as described by last poster for people who are building up large amounts of credit.

So, effectively, you get 120 days of service if you top up £10 credit. And then you get another 120 days if you forego that credit. (You would of course need some credit left over, to be able to use it in the second 120 days.)

So, over a two year period it would cost you £30, plus whatever credit you actually use.
In this connection, note that even if you have data switched off there's a small amount of data usage each day, so you will pay at least 1p per day, of £3.65 per year.

So, for extremely low usage, the minimum annual spend is £18.65.

  • Some interesting points there. Not thought about that if I was contemplating shifting network/tariff :o  I hope @Daffy_Duck_345 comes back to read these ideas. That puts 1p mobile in the frame when I was discounting it unless my usage went up.

Although this is what 1pMobile say on their website, I'm not sure if it is true. I switched to 1pMobile two weeks ago and initially I left data on all the time. I was charged 1p per day, even if I did not use my phone away from wifi. As an experiment, I then switched off data and I have not had any charges for data since them.

It looks like on my iPhone there is no background data usage. Perhaps this is only if there's no wifi when it needs to do the background maintenance stuff?

So, maybe 1pMobile minimum annual spend is only £15 per year. Either way, that's really not a lot.

I'm in  2 minds on what to do id maybe top £20 absolute max per year on the 3 one in £5  increments. Is it worth me switching to it. My phone number is a backup only

  • Slenderkitten and OP, it depends how much you will use it because on Three you will pay 10 times more (for calls and texts) than 1p mobile. Plus you never lose your credit (as long as you top up by £10 within every 4 month period or pay £30 to cover you for the full year and 1p mobile email you to remind you.
For anyone who wants it, if you are thinking to sign up to 1p mobile i have a link for a free £5 added to your credit when you sign up, just pm me if interested (as i don't think i can put links here).

The fact is that some handsets will use small amounts of mobile data even when mobile data is switched off. This can happen when you initially turn on your phone and it sends a small packet of data to register itself as online with services. This only seems to happen when data is set to 4G, changing your mobile data settings to use 3G can stop this on some handsets. I have had this before and know others have too.
