Future Diesel Residuals. To buy or not to buy?

Just prepare yourself to "write off" the full purchase price during your ownership, then any residual value when you come to sell/trade in is a bonus. The only problem will be if there is any financial punishment meted out for ownership of a diesel, and no-one can tell that, except there is an awful lot of money being printed now that the Treasury are going to have to claw back through future taxation.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

I tend to keep my cars for at least 10 years and very few such old cars can command more than 3-figures, simply because of the risk to the buyer. As for diesel 'tax punishments' who knows what might happen? I suspect that whatever happens it won't be confined to diesels. Government gets huge amounts of revenue through vehicle & fuel taxation and will have to recoup it from somewhere. Personally, I suspect some form of road pricing or pay-per-mile won't be far behind the decline of diesel/petrol vehicles and the rise of electric ones. It's difficult to see how electricity for cars could be taxed differently from domestic electricity and I can't see it being acceptable to increase domestic electricity tax. The technology certainly exists to track car mileage but it will be a huge political issue to see if people will accept it. Interesting times ahead!

I think road pricing for all vehicles is coming, it's the one thing which can be directly related to congestion. Electric cars are currently very expensive but as they increase and ice cars decline then revenue will have to be replaced one way or another, especially as electric is currently a niche product for many who can afford it.2

Until they come up with a viable alternative to hauling 44 tons then diesels are here to stay
Its a bit like self driving cars , good in theory not practicable in real life2 -
