Arrears / late payment - United Utilities !!!!!! up

Options
Hi all,
Some help required please, appreciate any feedback, and thank you in advance.
I checked my credit score/file y'day and found that i was in £2.5K arrears with United Utilities and have a missed payment for September to them (i dont even have an account with them and have never missed a payment when i did have one open), after some digging it appears this has been racked up at an apartment that i have never lived in, but in a block of flats I used to live at (the flat number for said bill is 1 digit different from the flat i moved out of) - this account for the flat in question was opened about the same time i moved out of the building, give or take a couple of days).
After spending most the day y'day on the phone to them worried someone had got hold of my details, it transpired this isn't the case, and i needn't worry, as it's just an error at their end (although UU aren't taking responsibility, they are blaming some company called sigma/stigma that i have never heard of).
Now, they've said they'll email equifax etc explaining this, nothing to do with me, and they're adamant it will be removed from my file completely, yet i'm just worried they aren't being 100% transparent, given it took 3/4 calls y'day for them to admit this account wasn't opened fraudulently, which was my main concern.
I've explained to them i want to know how on earth this has happened, how has an account been opened and linked back to me, which has now effected my credit score/file for god knows how long, annoyingly they seemed to brush it off and couldnt explain anything i asked and were blaming an influx of new staff as well as this company i've never heard of etc, which just isn't good enough.
I was looking at getting a Credit Card to help me over the few months given the current climate, I've a 6 month old son and a GF on maternity leave so times are difficult as everyone's well aware, i imagine chances of this are now very slim.
Has anyone ever experienced something like this before?
TY

If they are correcting it, chill your beans and just wait for it to be corrected. No point demanding how it happened.

Blimey. Post 3 and we have the obligatory 'do you work for the company' already.

    A new record.

Just wait for them to correct/remove it.
    It’ll take 6-8 weeks minimum.

Are you being serious re 'no point demanding how it happened'?
I have a right to know how it happened. An account has racked up well over 2 grand in arrears against my name.
They clearly know how it happened yet will not tell me. Just correcting it doesn't make it fine / go away.

thanks, and then once it has been removed, it will be gone *completely*, i.e. the arrears / missed payment don't exist?

If it legitimately has no connections to you then yes.
