It sounds like there's not enough pressure to wash the detergent into the drawer 

You need to clean the water inlet pipes , the holes and check the filter in the inlet hose too

Is your house water pressure ok ? Is the blue lever on the tap to the inlet hose fully open?

Sorted it now. The water outlet holes in the detergent drawer were half blocked. Haven't tried with powder yet. Thanks for all the advice.
