They key bit is for it to be effective you need to have you phone connected to the internet at some point in the day, doesn't have to be mobile data, just as easily be via wifi.silvercar said:

key bit is you need data switched on and Major phone operators in England and Wales are supporting NHS COVID-19 app users by ‘zero-rating’ data charges for all in-app activity. This means customers will not be charged for data when using the in-app functions, or if they are directed out of the app to nhs.uk websites.
So you need to turn data on but you won't be charged for using the app. The danger for a low/ zero data user is that you have other apps running that download data that you will be charged for, so you need to make sure all your settings for other apps are set to download over wifi only.2 -
Thank you all especial neilmcl. As I read through the thread I thought great then had my doubt towards the end but neilmcl clarified.
Many thanks to everyone!!

All those properties and flash cars but still running an iPhone 4.4

It's Bluetooth.
I have Bluetooth switched off at home and I have the nofitcation "exposure notifications inactive, to use this feature turn on Bluetooth".
I wouldn't bother putting mobile data on, just do the Wi-Fi. Even though the mobile data is free for the app, it's the background for other apps that will catch you out. Happened to my Mum.0 -
Surely if bluetooth is switched off you will never be seen as a potential match and others won't see you?Marvel1 said:It's Bluetooth.

Curious now: do you actively switch Bluetooth off at home, or is there a setting where bluetooth is off whenever you are on home wifi?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. iPhone4 only supports operating systems up to and including 7.1.2 and this app needs at least 13.5.SpiderLegs said:All those properties and flash cars but still running an iPhone 4.
So yes he or she will need a new phone. Surprised people still have iPhone4s tbh.2 -
I switch if off manually at home and on again if out.silvercar said:

No, tells you nothing about covid19.nhs.uk since the additional parameters were added by neilmcl's browser. The actual link isCarrot007 said:

Hi
The more I read this the more confused I get.
I'm not a phones person and they don't interest me. Only have mine on me
when out alone. its an old phone cost a lot of money when first bought.
Can someone please categorically confirm that if my PAYG data is turned off as usally is if i am out,
will the app register and alert me as set out within the gov criteria??
I am aware that mobiles give of a coded signal even with mobile data turned off.
I thank all again but had to ask again

You were given this information in the first few posts so I fail to see how you're confused. The app needs to have access to the internet periodically to work, whether that is via your mobile data or wifi when you're at home, without either then it's fairly useless.sweetsand said:Hi
