I need a financial advisor, but don't know how to go about finding someone. How do you know if you can trust someone? Any advice gratefully received.

Personal recommendation is usually the best way to find trustworthy advisers. It's worth asking around friends and relatives to see if anyone can give you a recommendation.
You could do Google search, and then have a good look at their website. If they have been going for a number of years, have more than one qualified IFA and a support staff, they are going to be reasonably stable. Then arrange to meet and see how you get on. You will usually get a good feel in the initial meeting as to whether to spend some money with them on the advice you need. You can always ask here to see if their advice seems appropriate before giving them to go-ahead to implement their recommendations. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1 -
www.unbiased.co.uk is a popular website that lists IFAs in your area who have signed up to that website. Would echo tacpot’s post about asking relatives for recommendations."If you aren’t willing to own a stock for ten years, don’t even think about owning it for ten minutes” Warren Buffett

Unbiased nowadays is a lead generation site and includes FAs as well as IFAs. It is not longer the directory it once was. Most of the owner/director IFAs I know no longer pay for an entry on unbiased.george4064 said:www.unbiased.co.uk is a popular website that lists IFAs in your area who have signed up to that website. Also, part of the problem with paid for directories is that, often, the best IFAs don't advertise and wont pay for entries on the various sites as they don't need to.
Google is very often the best way to find local firmsI am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.2 -
I have searched and searched, but have been unable to find an IFA in my area. I've asked around but no one has any recommendations. It would be good if this site could help compile a list of trustworthy IFAs.0

No need. I have compiled a list of trustworthy advisers. It's here:4

https://adviserbook.co.uk/ might be worth a try - tick "confirmed independent" and such other specialisms as required when the menu comes up.

When I do this, it comes up with ONE result, which appears to be a local one-man band representative of a Northern Irish firm of chartered financial planners. I'm not in NI, or even Eire.xylophone said:https://adviserbook.co.uk/ might be worth a try - tick "confirmed independent" and such other specialisms as required when the menu comes up.0 -
Have you just tried Google "Independent Financial Advisers in LOCATION", that may give you a starting point for website visists and / otr phone calls.0
