Dusty, is that the memorial intended tree that you'd been shopping around for for a while?I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.5

It's not spoken of as such, but I believe that's in both our minds. My friend's had a very difficult few years. Finding the badly-drained garden not the relatively straightforward project one might expect with a new build was an added challenge. It's something we've tackled together and, luckily, it's not proved as daunting as I first thought. It's a question of finding out what works....cheaply, if possible! I do hope the Astilbes, planted in the boggiest part, return!ArbitraryRandom said:Dusty, is that the memorial intended tree that you'd been shopping around for for a while?

"Badly-drained garden!" We had a similar experience 7 years ago when we moved to our current Home. The half of the backyard was marshy most of the time except during the mid of Summer (our 1st Summer here). The following Spring, we dug-in a drain corrugated pipe across the lowest part of the lawn - we saw a big drain difference of the water, today all year round nothing is marshy! except when it rains heavily, but the water will drain away within 30 minutes. All plants have been very happy. And yes, I planted colourful 'Venus' astilbes at the 'dappled light areas' and remained moist but not wet during the day, astilbes loved the moist to damp habitat! You will enjoy your plants during the Summer.

Good news re the Astilbes. Putting in a French drain is something I have experience of, but it isn't neighbourly if one's drainage is bound to travel straight into someone else's garden! We have discussed it, but the fall of the land means it would likely go into a 93-year-old's plot. There should never have been a problem, as the land originally sloped a different way at about 5 degrees, but the builders levelled, built another road and conveniently 'forgot' about the effect on drainage.

YBE, I was thinking more ethereal Lord of the Rings than frosted bathroom window
Btw, it was me that was asking about growing potatoes - I'll have a look for that GW episode.
Welcome, GreenBucket.
Dusty, fingers crossed your walking friend's tree thrives.
It's a bit of a nothing day today - cloudy, chilly, dry, no wind. We're going out for a walk soon, so I'll see if I can find the mini magnolia.'A watched potato will never chit'...6 -

Didn't like to say too much, but for a few hours now, we've had the conservatory doors open, both into the house and the outside world.Farway said:It's stopped raining! That is all, over & out

I thought it was you with the tatties pp but I couldn’t remember. It was in the last few minutes of the prog, if you don’t wanna watch the whole thing. Jobs For The Week is it..?Welcome greenbucket
Your friend is lucky to have you and your head full of knowledge Dusty, yous will work it out. Even if you are one of them think for yourself sorts
So. Good news and bad news. Good news - the rain stopped and the sun came out all at once. It’s glorious here, apricity galore and not a breath of wind. I can’t remember who forecast it this morning but one of them did. Might even have been the drunkards.
Bad news. The ‘found them on the grass, they’re probably cherry’ seeds I’ve carefully nurtured these last few years that are going great guns now I’ve planted them… are not cherry
(I think someone did predict that on here too.) On one of them the leaves are looking to be the same as my cat wee tree :’( Thank god I’ve got drink for the shock. So I’m down to Appleus Domesticus Tescoii, a pear whose fate is to be decided, and the Ska. I should probably be doing something about starting my toms, but the sun’s out, Ireland won, and I’ve drink galore so they can wait a bit longer

They’re sticky too, same as cat wee tree. A pic of the whole thing didn’t come out cos everything’s green in that corner. Fence, ivy, weeds…
The other one that I stuck in a bucket is looking the same but a bit behind. Ah well *shrug*
Edit - here’s the whole thing. It’s about 4ft tall ish
And yes that’s last year’s Tom compost stuff round it’s bum!Shout out to people who don't know what the opposite of in is.5
