Awful weather - typical Brits talk

Sunday started early with a pretty fierce dose of rain around 06.30, but it's been dryish ever since. Slightly overdid things up ladders yesterday, so I'm taking it easy today. We popped out this morning to see a breeder of good repute who sold us two young Vorwerks, so the hen population is now back to normal after last year's catastrophe with bumblefoot. That saw the two worst affected birds operated on by the vet and then re-homed with an enthusiast. We fixed the others, with several weeks of daily treatment and minor ops. Not a great outcome, but all were saved one, way or the other.
We shall settle the new birds in our mobile house and run before incorporating them into the flock. Vorwerks are perky birds, usually trouble free and very inquisitive. Proper photo to follow...probably!

Cloudy and muggy if you are out of the breeze.
The cooler weather seems to have helped the plants perk up. At least not deteriorating.
My kale and purple sprouting that never got planted were eaten by a variety of caterpillar and a sample of slugs - I've popped in a bit of soil just in case there's a chance.
The cut off stem of last seasons kale has produced leaves and no pest has been near it. Strange.
The veg plugs at the garden centre were just the first 2 leaves and £3 for 6 so on the off chance of a long autumn I potted some seed. You never know.
Happy days I went round the plot tonight dead heading and cutting out the crispy brown and my Jingle bells clematis has green bits and some new leaves.
The one stem baby hydrangea has sprouted some new shoots too.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Dull & cool this morning, and feeling a bit "I wonder if I have covid coming on" with feeling lethargic & sniffly, could just be side effects of so many pills I take these days.I did pot on some of my streptocarpus yesterday, "Polka Dot".What I learnt from that is I should be more patient and let them get much larger before potting on, so having done the Polka Dot, nine free plants BTW, I've left the others to grow up a lot more, may even leave them until next year now having seen Monty D taking similar cuttings on GW this week and saying how log they take to growNice looking chickens there, Woolsery, sound like a good addition to your flock, and sound quite characterfulYay 2P, with green bits back, a bit more rain and back to a lush oasis? Fingers crossed for youThese are the sunflowers at my volunteer garden place, growing in large pots near the main door ad giving a bright cheer up I hope. From own saved seedApologies for the out of focus bit, I blame the camera and breeze blowing at the timeEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens3

It's hot, muggy and spotting with rain.
I too woke up positive but feel really hot, nauseous and very tired. Don't know if it's a bug or weather but I think it's a day off.
I have 2 mini sunflowers come up in the pot of expired sweetpeas. They must be the freebies from morrisons last year.
A happy little treasure after this year s gardening if they make it.
Love yours Farway, real doosies! Can't see any blurring but then my eyes are blurryI can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Thank you, goldfinches 😊 We're definitely much recovered now, although still not 100%.
Farway, huge congrats to your granddaughter 🥀😀🌷And love your King Coleus and Sunflowers!
Sorry you're feeling unwell, twopenny 🙁 Also, hope your little sunflowers make it...you definitely deserve some success after the gardening year you've had 🌻
Woolsery, glad to hear you've added to your flock of chickens...those Vorwerks look super!
I finally managed to get our roses dead-headed yesterday (between the showers), after taking a well-earned, sunny day out at the seaside with DH on Saturday during which chips on the prom at Mumbles were enjoyed. Today it's been drizzly at best so an indoorsy day for me. Tomorrow if it stays dry I need to crack on with tidying the raised beds in the courtyard which are looking awful after several weeks of neglect 🙄
In the white(ish) bed there's not much flowering now....except Japanese anemone Honorine Jobert which has grown massive since planting last year (can't believe I originally planned a clump of three!)....

That Welsh earth is obviously full of something lily! Won't speculate too much, but considering the age of the property, it's probably what they call 'occupational soil.'I didn't feel great either this morning 2p, before realising a 'cutdown on the carbs' was making me feel light-headed. A bowl of cereal and a poached egg on toast later I was OK, though probably not on course to lose any weight! What out of focus, Farway? That's reverse depth of field, that is, and blooming difficult too on auto!
No sunflowers here this year, so yours are extra welcome.
Vorwerks are still nervous and not performing for the camera properly, so I will reprise a plant I've shown before: the white version of Eupatorium, loosely named 'Ivory Towers.' Well, it towers over me, but that's not difficult! In the foreground is the Acca sellowiana that's supposed to be pretty tender....and isn't.3 -
We had very welcome real rain yesterday afternoon, the proper stuff to soak in without flooding, went on for hours at last.Of course this morning, every slug & snail is out and about, even found a large snail in the conservatory this morning, how does that happen when I've not carried anything in from outside? Flying in through open windows? My "maybe it's covid" feeling has gone and feeling more perky this morning, so I hope the same has happened to you 2PWoolsery, tom seeds saved yesterday, just waiting for them to dry out a bit. I don't do fancy seed saving, some techniques I've seen on YouTube seem a lot of faff and in the "muck & magic" category, I just smear the tom's innards onto kitchen roll and let them dry off. Come sowing time I sow as they are, kitchen paper and all, soon disintegrates & up they popStill a dull day but at least watering is not required today, a day off gardening again, at least with the rain the ground will be a bit softer and I hope to lift some excess crocosmia "Lucifer" corms to give to my gardening granddaughter, she has a pond, but her crocosmia nearby is the bog-standard orange one which is nice but for impact Lucifer beats itL L nice pic of the Japanese anemone, if only I had spaceEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens3

That was weird yesterday. I met a few people who said they felt unwell. And yes, fine today thank you.
Woolsery, I'm on a diet, low sugar and carb. Still craving sugar that isn't the fruit kind
And a downpour Farway. Hope it's cleared the air as well as watering plants.
Nothing predicted here for the foreseeable so watering again tomorrow.
More plants sending out new shoots that I thought were goners which is a relief. The tomatoes have put on a spurt of growth and lots of (very small)) tomatoes, sweeter than usual.
The thyme looks really healthy and best of all a handful of raspberries! Looks like new growth their too.
So far it's looking up again for us all......
Bank holiday I plan to tackle the badger run - again. I'm going to have to work something out there.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Conspiracy theory anyone?, probably Brexit or TrumpDull but warm, only garden related today will be chucking the tea-leaf slops bucket on the garden, and I have spotted two ripe figs, so they are getting scoffed later2P, I remember reading somewhere about treating tomatoes mean for getting better tasting ones, supposed to concentrate the flavours I thinkToday's pic is a dahlia I've had for a couple of years, named variety, but label lost. This is the first year it has done well, normally it's snail food by now. The rain drops appealed to me, hence the arty style of shotEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens4

With most of the concrete mixing behind me for now I feel quite jolly today. That polytunnel isn't going anywhere, but will it be ready in time for......? No I won't say it!
