I think it might be something to do with the colour - red lettuces seem to evade slug attack better than green ones. Not sure about Bantry House - looks a bit posh...And happy post-birthday 2P!

Morning all, breezy, damp & dull but could be brightening a bit laterHoping I'm not harbouring more lurgy, I was drooping about yesterday & struggling to get erse moving this morning. Now I'm up and looking at the gloom outside, it may not have been worth itThat chard looks gawjus Dusty, whenever I've tried to grow it, the Rainbow stuff, mine is never very mixed and colourful. I only try it for the looks, not too keen on the taste TBH but I'd be tempted by VulcanNo proper gardening again, but a shock this morning as I opened the curtains. I've had old, 2024 Christmas, hyacinth bulbs loitering carefully drying off on the window sill, and boom boom, one is sprouting
I'll give them a tidy up & water later, may even do the same to the amaryllisHope the phone got sorted 2PNumerus non sum7 -

Usually, a battery of supplements, plus hearty meals, especially with plenty of garlic, chilli, ginger etc incorporated works OK, but there's always a chance of needing an extra nap, courtesy of “Scottish water.”
Looking outside, and at the forecast, a nap seems more than likely!
I've looked-up 'Vulcan,' and oddly, the photo I took looks nothing like what's pictured on the packets.
Old tap (German beginning with 'F') scrapped, and a new one with 12 year guarantee from British company, Methven (Deva), installed. It delivers twice the quantity of water the duff old jobbie did, and it's nicer to use. Result.

Good news on the tapAfter your posting I looked up Vulcan, seems it's not as we thoughtThe Vulcan is from the name of the village the chard variety was discovered in, and it's mixed, not all red as we were misled to believe"The vegetable features large, tender, and glossy leaves that come in vibrant hues of red, green, purple, and orange"My assumption is the blighters sowed Vulcan and then selected the purple seedlingsCutting out a stage or chunks to achieve a desired result can get you in biggly trouble
Having read taste notes I may try some, but suspect it's an acquired earth taste

First class detective work, and I love that last comment!
Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to sue the RHS for misleading me so cruelly.
Back in the everyday world, I've sown 'Bright Lights,' costing just over £1 from Premier seeds, and I'm not selecting particular colours. My guess is they'll all taste similarly earthy, which is a quality I like, but recognise not everyone feels similarly. I have some outdoors and some in the polytunnel, hedging bets regarding the severity of winter.OT: Went to sleep last night to the sound of heavy rain and woke to the same, so I expect dawn will illuminate great sogginess. I'm relieved we have the field hedges cut and the septic tank drain field sorted, since those jobs might now become almost impossible for some months. Tomorrow looks to be the best weatherwise this week, but will I be able to persuade Mrs Dusty to visit Rosemoor? I'm betting she'll want to start cutting her yew hedges instead!
Remaining with veg, here are the Fig Leaved Gourds (Shark Fin Melons) harvested at Rosemoor last week. If you look carefully, you'll see there's a real person within the shelter, as well as its usual resident. I didn't know that when I took the photo.Sometimes, even the best plans don't quite work out!
Taking his break, he informed us the gourds had been picked that morning, having clothed the fruit and veg garden arch through summer.

YBE , Gee I hope they’re sorted for Xmas. DDs other half is a hoarder of stuff , he hadn’t sorted anything ,dd wouldn’t throw anything belonging to him out. So it’s been boxed/bagged up unsorted. So I fear it may stay like that. As myself and dgson are quite minimal and organized it stresses us out.
Things have been manic for the last week, poor dd has chronic back pain and all this has been on top of work. I’m off to dentist then straight to old house to clean and sort again. The new house has had a bit of paint to freshen up but has a few major jobs to come. It’s been non stop rain here which doesn’t help matters. I’m reading along but not much sinking in at the moment , so hope all are well and gardens nearly sorted for winter.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.6 -
Happy birthday 2p 💐🎂I hope you enjoyed it. Plus you’ve got yourself a decent phone.
Dusty , the guy with his phone has his trousers round his ankles😂 I was about to say like your wellies !! 😉Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.6 -
Happy Birthday 2p.
Raining here (again). I need to stop myself from buying more bulbs and concentrate on planting the ones I've got/remembering what I plan to do with the ones on their way...6 -
Thanks for the good wishes everyone. That's kind of you.
B'day best forgotten for many reasons 😉
Defied Dusty's warning and went to big town yesterday where it was mostly dry and the leg held up well. As did the phone but the battery drained out again last night so I'll get a cheapie while I look. New is cheaper than second hand it seems.
But I kept getting sidetracked by cameras which I was much more interested in 😬
Scary drive back in dark and torrential rain. I've only just looked outside to see if there's any damage because it was hammering on the windows last night.
It's perked up the marigold I transplanted but blown the swim towels off the line for the third time 😐
Not quite a hoarder but I do keep a lot of towels for emergencies and foul weather.
So no gardening. Plenty to do inside.I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

There are worse things than hoarding, and feeling daunted by the amount of work ahead on a 'new' house. Much as we expected, our DD2 has worked out the £35k they 'saved' on their house, will mostly be swallowed up within their first year of ownership. Being honest, we also broke the bank on this property, having to borrow in order to finish it. And, of course, you're never 'finished,' which it's why enjoying whatever you have at any given time is so important.
He has his RHS dungarees down. I'd have done the same, as it was warm.wort said:Dusty , the guy with his phone has his trousers round his ankles😂 I was about to say like your wellies !! 😉
The other guy has much nicer wellies than mine, and he's turned-out extremely well for gardening, but then, he's also in the 'employ' of the RHS!

Glad the leg cooperated, though.
I told Mrs Dusty to nip down the M5, PDQ, and she did listen, but still got caught up in the rain.Today more downpours. I wonder how Mr Canute's dam is faring? Might give it a poke, later!
