Sunny start but deceptive, more rain due, I'll hold off planting out until this afternoon & see what it's like thenMy tomatoes are looking a tad sickly this morning, especially own seed saved Bloody Butcher. Still in pots on my window sill which i suspect may be the problem, by now & decent May they'd be out in the full daylight & conservatory, but the conservatory is full of stuff that should by now be in the gardenI have time to sow more toms, the Shirley is doing OK, which is good as it was one of my just in case "Bankers"It's going to be an odd season, just reading Apodemus about snow on hills and hoping apple buds open, at least I've no snow & my apples are full of open blossom, I was watching the bees "fixing it for me" yesterday's sunIdly gazing out of the window this morning & watched a fox hop from roof of my shed, then stroll along top of my garden wall and into next door, at least it was just passing by & not stopping with intent, unlike some cat has done, grrrrrDave saw / horse, like it, but for real boys toys there's a bloke in the States [of course] who has a tractor with a saw mill attachment, he rolls up & turns trees into planks, not just for wood but the decorative patterns in the wood. On You TubeEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens4

Hope the wind has done now!Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.10

On a brighter note, the first aquilegia are about to bloom, which always helps herald the start of the flowering season in the garden.5 -
Mr Sparrowhawk came to lunch at the bird table, but their chosen victim nipped into a berberis bush and the alternative, a dunnock that has a nest in the bay tree, also gave them the slip. After flying around the bay tree a few times, Mr S swooped away in the direction of the valley, no doubt to cause further avian aggro....12

Brrrrr...........
Went out when it was barely above 2 degrees to work at the more distant orchard, with fleece and heavier cagoule plus mitts, hat and gloves, forecast 7-9 degrees
By the time I got there it was lovely. Was rapidly down to a long sleeve T shirt and remained that way until leaving after 4pm. The views across to the Pennines were superb and it would have been easy to fall asleep in the sun after lunch. We're slowly retrieving the situation after a few months neglect. The apples aren't all in bloom but some are lovely and the quince are promising a show next time we visit.
Just got home to a wintery shower and cold NNE wind.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing5 -
Lovely morning with us in North Yorkshire.
Then all went to pot this afternoon with hail sleet & heavy rain.
No wonder my veg plants are not growing.

Sun was shining, opened the green house front up. Few hours later, begged OH to go and close it (I was on a works call) because the tomatoes really didn't need any more water!
I'm going to be keeping the front closed when it's raining for a while. The tomatoes looked happier this morning than they had at the weekend, so I think perhaps the grow bag was just too wet. I need to cut some more holes in it, and possibly drill more in the tray, at the weekend.5 -
The day began with a not uncommon rescue of a long tailed field mouse from one of the cats. Unlike voles, these mice fight back and Izzy was bitten, giving me the chance to nip in and grab. Mouse, apparently unscathed, safely returned to hedge.Cloudy start and the prospect of some sun later, but after tomorrow the outlook's unsettled and there could be a frost tonight.
Yesterday I mowed all the lawns and finished turning the oak tree into logs, so now I can focus on 'proper' gardening. Our friend who brought a trailer full of demolition wood to burn included enough decent board to build some deep beds for the price of a packet of screws, so I might give that a go!
Of course there's voting; possibly the most depressing point in the week, but we will have a chat with the ladies and see how they cope with a socially-distanced jigsaw! The Village Hall will open properly on 17th May, when people will probably gather for a bit of a social, but there's no doubt the past 18 months have sucked a lot of life out of the community. Back in the old days it was a place noted for irreverence and fun....

No more problems with the chicks, which are all gaining confidence and weight.
We think there is one cockerel.

Needing some drier weather here. It's been pretty wet for the last week, with snow on the grass again this morning. The weeds are really starting to come up now on the gravel drive, but it is too wet and windy to risk spraying them. I had also intended going round with a liquid feed, but that is probably also a job for drier weather, otherwise it will just get washed down through the soil and too diluted to do any good. While the forecast is now showing that the temperature might get into (low) double figures over the weekend, it will still be with a fresh breeze off the North Sea, so the wind-chill will remain.4
