Awful weather - typical Brits talk

Lost my other post .Sunrise and sunset on one page both lovely photos.
YBE sounds like you are settling in at the new job, nice colleagues make all the difference. Did you get much snow over on the other side of the Pennines?Hope those with lurgy are feeling better.
I nipped out to do a bit of clearing at the DDs grandads this morning, it’s awful black ice particularly on my estate . Suns doing it’s best though so hopefully clear it before temps drop tonight.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.6 -

So what wind direction do you need to get the bonfire going Dusty? It's a shame Mr Canute isn't more agreeable, if he only knew what a wealth of knowledge he has in his neighbour. Did you get your quiz written?I missed yours and Farway's posts today.Summat weird was going on with our broadband, but it appears OK now.
I can take wind from either west or east at present, as I've two bonfire sites 150m apart, so and I can choose. However, I went out poster putting-upping with Mrs D this morning, and now it's too late to start. I shall be hoovering instead. I have a date with a footpath tomorrow, so penance is due!Mr Canute isn't a notable gardener, nor would he be likely to take advice from me. After all, he claimed ignorance last year, after I'd delivered a letter to him personally, explaining the work we proposed had been approved by the council, and giving him all the web page links. Some people can't be helped.Anyway, I have a plan.....
The quiz is easy as there's so much stuff online and elsewhere. The tricky bit is picking the right questions. I have one good one so far!But I may have been excommunicated by the time that happens. My delight at sorting out the trip was short-lived. The others now want to discuss it at the end of the month!
I have responded.
This sort of thing is why I rarely join clubs etc.
Not buying into it.7 -

Glad you caught upAh, the organising, very odd how every one can tell you exactly how to do it but just don't have the time to do it “properly” themselvesMy volunteer folk want the website I set up to be having different capabilities, edit / update from the office etcI have given them the host details & passwords, and it's gone very quiet

Ah that old trick Farway. I used to travel to other schools at lunchtime and the staff would come with questions just as I was packed to leave. I gave them a time I would be leaving by and no exceptions. Yup, that worked and the questions slowed to nought.Bluey, I guess those are daffs, the tall one ready for a bud.....almost like the southern onesYour pommander looks healthy considering what it's had to put up with. Snip the droopy bit off and no one will know.Wort, black ice! That sounds not good. Take care. The tidying can wait.Dusty we wait and see, wonder what it is?Actually got out in the garden today. Not as warm as yesterday because there was a chill wind but I got the tulip bulbs into pots and daffs and crocus into the ground - sheesh these things can multiply!I had a chuckle because of watching Monty carefully putting crocus corms into a pot one at a time right side up. I was frozen and the ground hard so I just tipped the tiddlers into some holes and covered them up. They'll sort themselves outI also did what I said I wouldn't and cut back the standard lavenders on one side. Would you believe it shoots coming out of old wood I chopped last year so fingers crossed. No I didn't do cuttings Farway. It wasn't much good with disease and mostly hanging on by a thread. I have way to much and no one to pass any new onto.I would have survived if one neighbour after another didn't come over and talk. Mostly about themselves and I got chilled, now feel iffy again and leg aching. I do love them but sometimes a hello is enough. Would you like a hand is out of the questionStill, it looks lots better out the front. Gave them a feed of BFB too as they are sending up flowers

Anyone see Countryfile? Those sculptures were amazing!!!!! I'd have one (or more) of thoseAlso, the flow control on rivers struck a chord.Perhaps that's what your neighbour is doing Dusty? It's what used to happen at Tarr Steps, the pre historic bridge that collapses on a regular basis. There's a set of thick cables further up that were installed to catch tree trunks and such. But it's never been adjusted for height that I know. A build up there would stop the torrents that cause the damage.Meanwhile we have beavers installed to create a sink for excess rain. So far so good.Trouble is they are reproducing and wanting new terratory and their favourite food is the fruit tree. Major conservation orchard just down the road.....................does anyone look more than one step ahead?

No we didn’t get a single flake of snow wort
Inland and uphill they snaffled the lot, Harrogate etc had plenty! Yous will be thawing out on that side now are ya? Cissie was in double digits at the weekend
Ooh excommunication Dusty, how exciting. What ya done this time?
People are s0ds Farway, armchair experts. Daddy was forever saying “the more you do, the more they’ll let you do”. True is that.
I should be knee deep in daffs 2p, the number I planted. I think I’ll dismantle my pomander, snip the ends off and poke them back in again. The bits are too long. No I didn’t catch CF last night (himself made the dinner so I let him watch War Nonsense) but I’ll have to look it up tonight. That’ll give me something to watch after Only Connect
Cold morning here and windy with it. Might be the last sparkly clear morning if the weather bods are right. I like the cold but I’m ready to see the back of it now. Currently 1’ feels like -6’but the sou’wester is to bring us some heat. They say. Oh and got a UV yesterday! Just the one, around 1200, but it shows things are moving in the right direction. Speaking of the days lengthening - timeanddate says we’ve nearly half an hour more daylight now than we had at the solstice. So it’s truly definitely shifting alongAs I suspected, somebody has been adding soil to my garden. The plot thickens...9 -

Might as well. Pay the licence fee and never watch their nonsense.
I've covered our neighbour. He is not doing anything sensible like that; he just thinks 8 or 9 mature oak trees shouldn't drop their leaves and twigs in 'his' stream. He's also said he'll stop us draining into our field, because the water ends up in 'his' watercourse. I didn't tell him 5 septic tanks already drain into the land above his!As for the Tarr Steps wire, it's supposed to stop whole trees being carried down into the clapper bridge in a flood, which it possibly does. Years ago, I used it to cross the river, much to our kids' amusement. Nowadays, I'm not up to that, but my DD2's husband crossed in the same way in 2019....and returned.I'll try to dig out a photo....
Here you go:I've covered the beavers released near us too. They started eating a farmer's prized apple orchard. I'm informed he protected the remaining trees. They were placed in entirely the wrong section of river.
Car problems today. My date with a footpath to a beach is cancelled. Not buying into it.8 -
Dawn here, just greyYoungBlueEyes said:70% off not enough to tempt you Farway? Must be a hellish expensive gc. Or just full of unnecessary tat.Mostly tat, it's the sort of GC where plants are secondary, prefers to sell patio furniture, jumpers, outdoor clothing, jam, cakes etc. However, I will pop in but the chances of 70% off chicken poo pellets for instance are slim, maybe 70% off a twinkly Christmas treetwopenny said:I also did what I said I wouldn't and cut back the standard lavenders on one side. I've still got some lavender grown from seed to sort out yet.Ruffled through my Parker catalogue, some tempting but TBH nothing I need, or have space fortwopenny said:Meanwhile we have beavers installed to create a sink for excess rain.
