Tiscali - BT Line Contract?

Options
Can anyone clear up a somthing I dont really understand.

I moved into a flat last month and got the BT line connected without having to pay the £125 connection charge, it was not a new line, the line had been connected in the past and active just before I moved in as the previous tenant paid the £125 connection charge.

So now i activated the BT line in my name (option 1) and I want to join Tiscali on the £14.99 per month package with Tiscali handling my BT line rental. Is this possible or am i tied into paying BT the line rental direct for 12 months?

I thought that your are only tied into BT for 12 months when you get them to activate a new line and pay them £125.

So can i just pay Tiscali £14.99 and let them handle the BT Line Rental, or would i incurr some penalty from BT. Basically i need to know if i am in a contract with BT for the line rental - if so do i have to wait 12 months before i can leave and transfer to a provider who can handle my line rental and billing or actually just leave.

Once BT activate a line its a 12 month contract (unless you took an 1month special offer). You WILL be charged something for leaving depending on what you have, option 1 indicated a £70 fee.

  • DON’T WORRY!!

As with other ISP's that offer free line rental
Tiscali will pay the line rental to BT so you dont need to worry!
So you wont get a bill from BT, but from Tiscali and you still 'keep' the BT line.

Untrue. If BT RETAIL connect the line then you have to pay them the line rental for 12 months unless you are willing to pay a cancellation fee. By moving the line rental to Tiscal you are breaking the contract. Tiscali pay BT WHOLESALE the rental, as do Retail.

Minantra, you are very wrong mate sorry.

Now im even more confused with a differance of opinions !

To clarify, I didnt have a new line installed with a £125 fee ect, the line was already in place and it cost me nothing for BT to activate it and put it into my name.

Not sure what to do now, will try to get through to BT tonight after work - they will probably tell me i cant leave..

I thought though as BT will still be getting their line rental - albeit from Tiscali, there would not be any cancellation charge, as techincally, the line is still active and they are still receiving payment fro BT. ...

As I understand, if you were a BT customer with an account at your previous address and you just transfered your account to your new address your existing contract continues.

If however you took over the line when you moved in and you were a new customer to BT with a new account I think you will be tied into a 12 month contract.

Edit :- Just found this from another thread
From 1st May 2007, for customers ending their service early, we replaced the existing charges with a policy that requires customers who have ordered a line on or after 1st May to pay the outstanding line rental for the 12-month minimum term of their contract, up to a maximum of £70 (incl. VAT). Customers moving home and transferring BT service to their new address will be subject to a new minimum term from the date of start of service at the new address.

When you cancel the contract you only pay the outstanding line rental for the 12-month minimum term of their contract, up to a maximum of £70 (incl. VAT). So if say 3 months were left you would only pay 3 x £10.50p= £34.50p.

If BT activate a line its 12 months, even if you had a line in a prior property.

  • Drunkstar i have a question if i may.

I am with tiscali and moving. I read tiscali terms and conditions and they read that you can rejoin tiscali for line rental once your minimum term with BT is over, and it then states in brackets "which is usually three month".

Is this not true then? Am i not able to get a three month contract with BT?

    Thanks for your help :)
  • I dont work for BT anymore, but the BT term is 12 months now. Has been for quite some time. :)
