I helped someone, by paying for their debt on my credit card so the credit card debt is recorded on my credit file.

Right. That makes more (less) sense...

So you’ve now gotten yourself into debt over someone else’s debt...

the question originally was not about the validity of the debt. I know what I did thank you. Thanks for being helpful!
  •  Pay it off in full, stop the chasers and once cleared rebuild your savings at your own pace. You can't have it reduced or offer to pay 1800 until it's in default and paying monthly only prolongs what is inevitable anyway. As said earlier, instead of paying monthly - pay it off as soon as you can, keep your credit file intact and spend nest few months replacing 3000 - much quicker than 6 year mark on defaulted account ( or partially settled - still leaves a big bad mark on your file ) once you have 3000 back go ahead with your mortgage . Being accepted for any credit is getting harder and harder and last thing you want on your credit file just before you apply for a mortgage is a bad mark.
