Many ttimes me and my OH get a fright and think, gosh  are all the cars taxed so we go to the gov online check road tax and you can check mot as well if due. Then we go, oh gosh, are the cars insured or when due, we go to the insurance online site and check without pulling out papers etc. However, the insurance site warns you can only check your own cars. Why is that as it give less info than the road tax/mot gov sites?

Thanks.

    You can.
  • It might well be down to the fact that when checking the MOT and tax status you are using a government IT system but when checking the insurance, you are using the system of a private company and they don't want to take any risk of enabling someone to break date protection laws.

Thanks but the DP laws are the same for both, surely?
As I said in the OP, the tx and mot site appear to give away a lot more info.

    NB:
This is the warning the MID site comes up with.  Surely this cant be different from the mot and tax site?

I am entitled to the insurance information about the vehicle detailed above for one or more of the following reasons: It is either registered/ owned/ insured by me or my employer; I am permitted to drive it; I am an Insurance Broker or agent and acting on behalf of my client.

I understand it is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without any of the above reasonable causes. If I fail to provide true reasons for acquiring this information I may be committing an offence of unlawfully obtaining data contrary to section 170 of the Data Protection Act 2018. I further understand that this check on askMID is not proof of insurance nor is it proof of no insurance but confirms only if the vehicle is currently showing on MID.

As the mot and tax are provided by or on behalf of government departments then the records are public. Insurance is a matter between policy holder and a private company

You can check if your car is insured but only get basic info like YES

You can request (and pay for) someone elses insurance data from the Motor Insurance Database quite legally.

    Hi
No, you can't. There has to be a reason as stated below, - please see quote. Thanks.
