    Is this a case of having a device that can give a whole host of information that really doesn't have a day to day use. ?

    I doubt it - even though my smart meter stopped sending data back over three years ago when we changed supplier the IHD still allows me to read the meter without having to go outside, It's accurate enough for met to know what is turned on and using power so I can go around and check what is turned on and how much it's using. It also allows me to read the daily consumption from each of the last seven days and also the monthly consumption for the past 13 months which can be quite useful (although I keep a weekly and monthly record of meter readings anyway)

    Part of the problem with the smart meter IHD is that people get one,  see how much they are using (or how much it's costing) and then go into panic mode. They cant actually correlate that with what they've got turned on and dont put in the effort to try and work it out.. It's like anything else - you need to learn how to use it and understand what it's telling you.

    Even the OP should be able to go around his house and check how much energy each item is using by turning stuff off or on and seeing what happens on the IHD- it's not really rocket science, it just needs a bit of effort to try and understand what it's telling you.

  • CAN ANYONE HELP?  My parents in law live in a one bed bungalow. I had a big row with  SSE who had an elderly, infirm and unwell couple on an inappropriate and expensive dual tarriff for years and ignored the fact that their consumption of electricity in that property was way over the top (16,000 kw per annum).  I managed to get a paltry refund o £600 from SSE (should have been a lot more) but then changed to EO.  EON have been spectacularly poor at getting a correct bill drawn up after joining them in Dec 2019 and only just now having received a bill with the correct details on it. However once again the elec  consumption  is way ovrer the top. EON have just installed their own smart meter but i believe there is something very amiss  with the elec supply to ther property. i have even wondered if someone has rigged something up to divert elec to another property.  WHO CAN I CONTACT WHO CAN SORT THIS OUT?  Please please any help gratefully reeceived.

    It's highly unlikely with a bungalow. Have you done any checks yourself ?

    Have you been reading the meter regularly to see what the usage is ?   Can you give give us an example of a meter reading you've been taking - many meters can be difficult to read. A photo of the meter would help.

     Big users are heating, storage rads, electric showers, old freezers, underfloor heating, panel heating.

    You say dual fuel so I assume they use gas

    PS could you set up your own thread for this -  that saves replies to your parent's issue getting mixed up with the original post.

  • No gas at the property just electric. They were on a duel tarriff (i.e. peak and non peak) with SSE for years which they should never haver been on as retired elderly pensionsers who are in all day and not into putting washing machines/tumble driers on at night.

    @dirowlands - please set a up a separate thread - select the New Thread button on the LHS.

    All electric - means storage rads  which means E7; or panel heaters, fan heaters and a very high bill. What is the heating?

    Have you done any meter readings or copies of the bill ??

    As Robin says, please start your own thread.  That said, when you do please add some more info about how the house is heated. If there is no gas then the cheapest way to heat a property (modern ASHP aside, perhaps) is going to be on an E7 (dual rate) tariff with storage rads.  Whilst not ideal for an elderly couple at home all day, that and some additional boost heating is probably the only way to go. Not sure why you managed to get any money back from SSE though.

    @dirowlands

    An all electric bungalow is going to be expensive and you cant compare with a 3 bed semi gas heated.

    Details awaited
