£6 allowance from employer for working from home

Hi my employer won't pay the £6 for help towards the extra energy used when working from home, their reason is I am saving travelling costs, however they are paying some people for it,  Is this correct?

As long as the reason they are refusing to pay you an amount towards your WFH costs isn't discriminatory (race, sex etc) then it's entirely lawful. You can, if you wish, claim tax relief on £6 per week from HMRC which would equate to £1.20 per week for a basic rate taxpayer.
  • Thanks for your reply, I think it is people who don't use transport to work who are being paid allowance.

There was a thread where it said that HMRC are taking a similar line with their employees, so I think it is something you will just have to accept. If you meet the conditions, you can claim tax relief on £6 a week (worth £1.20 a week to a basic rate taxpayer) without proof of expenses, as has been pointed out.
  • Have already done so thank you, I was just checking .
  • That makes sense - if they don't save the money, they're having to spend more to work from home.
You're saving money as you don't need transport, so this covers the money you have to spend on energy.

    Seems OK to me :)

What does your company expenses policy say? Ours certainly doesn’t have this allowance.

Where you live is your choice. Most employers don't pay you more because you choose to live further away. Why should they then take this into account when refunding the extra costs everyone incurs working from home?

We haven’t yet established whether this payment is a contractual entitlement or a discretionary payment
