TV licence paid by cheque, no record?

I purchased a new TV licence through TV Licensing and paid in full by cheque. After chasing up why I haven't received my new licence, TV licensing informed me that they do not have a record of a cheque payment being made. My bank statement is showing that the cheque had been cashed a few weeks ago. My question is can I make a request to my bank to whom the cheque was paid to?

Yes, your bank should be able to provide a copy with all relevant endorsements, etc, showing which account it was paid into.  Perhaps time to consider moving to more efficient and auditable means of payment?

In what way is a cheque payment not auditable?

That should be read as 'more efficient and [more] auditable' - as suggested, it is usually possible to locate cheque copies in such scenarios (assuming they've not been mislaid or suffered other side-effects of manual processing) but it's far simpler to trace electronic payments, both by the banks concerned and also by the sender and recipient.

I always pay mine by cheque, and have never had a problem. As the cheque has been banked, you are licensed, with or without the paper licence. Keep your records, in case they decide to start prosecuting for lack of licence. You will have a clear defence.

There's nothing wrong with paying bills by cheque but I find it far more convenient to pay by direct debit and get my licence by email. The main reason I went this route was the need for direct debits to satisfy account requirements but I do still find that it suits me better anyway. I haven't owned a chequebook for at least 10 years and don't miss it one bit.

Cheques are destroyed in days now. So best you will get is a copy. At least that would show if it has been altered.
And as eskbanker said there are far more secure and quicker ways of paying now.
Cheques can be intercepted in the post and paid in to a 3rd party account if altered. It was well know a few years ago that cheques to HMRC were being taken at some point in the mail and paid into a account of a HMR C(cant say that bit)

I had to pay a house deposit - quite a large amount. I could have sent it by chaps (too big for FP) but judged it safer to pop into the solicitor's office with a cheque. 'Long live cheques' as an option is my view.

I also use them when replying to offers eg 'your first month is only £3 then every month £19.99 until cancelled'. The £3 can be paid by CC or cheque. I don't ever give them my CC details but write a £3 cheque.
