Energy Meters - do I have to have one?

Most of the top picks for my next switch with MSE energy club state that they include me having a meter installed. So legally do I have to have one if I choose that tariff? Or do I choose a supplier who doesn’t state smart meter installation? Thanks for your help.

No need to be forced into having a smart meter if you don't want one, many smaller companies don't insist on you having one. If you sign up to a tariff requiring smart meters but refuse to have them installed you'll probably find they will switch you to a more expensive tariff, possibly adding exit fees as well.Make sure you search the whole market (the CEC doesn't do this). Start with Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?' and check whether separate suppliers are cheaper, they probably will be.BTW, wrong forum. You'll get more replies in Energy.1

Thank goodness it's not yet a legal requirement to have the money-wasting things installed. It's costing us all a real mint in fuel prices.ut yes, some deals require them so always read the small print. My last deal said it included upgrading to a smart meter, but in the small print said you could opt out, so I did.1
