..I should add that my one year contract is due to expire next month anyway.
So there is no need to cancel, just wait for it to lapse??
It may not "lapse" but go onto a monthly & more costly rolling contract
    Similar to energy companies
My NOW one will do just that should I not take any action

Open Reach ISP to Open Reach ISP   gaining supplier does all the work including cancellation .
VM to Open Reach supplier   , VM do not cancel your OR ISP .
As said ISP contract ends and moves to rolling 30 day contract at standard prices until cancelled .

The OP is going to take a VM package , if PN were to be asked for the phone number to be ported to VM, the  PN service ‘may’ cease , but no evidence that the OP wants to keep the phone number , so PN would continue to provide service , if the OP assumed that VM were in any way going to advise PN just because VM are a supplier, PN could argue that what’s stopping the OP having two providers ( PN and VM ) one as back up for the other.
As others have stated VM to OR isn’t the same as a migration between two providers on OR, if the OP doesn’t call to quit PN, the service will continue, arbitrarily just stopping the DD to PN , hoping PN  get the message  , isn’t a very good idea

Just to update re the closure on this: PlusNet acknowledged there was no new contract, stopped the payment demands, and refunded the very small amount that I overpaid before I'd cancelled the DD.

    No phone calls needed.
