Virgin Broadband - "New" versus "Existing" customers

Not sure about this but is there any kind of code of practise around new versus existing customer. I am currently paying £66/month for the Virgin M350 Fibre broadband and experiencing dreadful issues and when I went online saw that I could get the M500 Fibre broadband for £45/month for a new customer. On raising this with Virgin, they were quite unapologetic about this and stated that this was standard practise and the only way that I could get this deal was to cancel my broadband, be without it for 1 month and then re-join if I was so inclined.

Problem with that is the offer may not be available in 1 month's time. It may be better, it may be worse.Companies can offer what they like to who they like unfortunately, and the status quo is you drop out of contract, you might as well just give them your wallet.I would say that if you can get away with a slower internet connection then you may be able to get a better deal elsewhere. Unfortunately once you get to this sort of speed the market availability/competition dries up, so you may want to consider whether you actually need that speed of internet.0

Every few months I have exactly the same dilemma. So I simply cancel my account and sign up under my wife's name or vice versa, been switching for many years in this way simply because new customers get better deals. I actually do the cancellation and the signup on the same call. Sometimes you get through to someone with common sense and they'll stop you from cancelling and just put the discount on you. Sometimes you aren't lucky so just go through the process, no brainer for me.

Sound like a good deal if you've only got to wait a month. SKY make you wait a whole year if you want to rejoin as a new customer. They are also pretty clued up about cancelling and setting up a new account under a different name at the same address - it's not allowedNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
