Hannimal said:Yeah I looked at the instagram for this carpenter and it's not really my style. I quite like modern, sleek and minimalist or scandi boho. So aesthetically IKEA would be better. I am not sure what you say about anyone being able to assemble a PAX being true, I am not even sure I'd be strong enough to carry all the pieces upstairs!! Let alone know how to make it look fitted and cut the extra pieces that don't come in the flatpack. They might even be able to suggest someone to fit your Ikea stuff, if that's what you want.It reads like you're putting up barriers here to convince yourself to go with Hammonds 😕Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Browntoa said:A skilled local carpenter ( not a general builder ) should be able to build a bespoke design for much less . I've used one to build custom storage under a bath with a hidden push opening door.100% this!My friend had a home office built by a local carpenter with some of the finishing using IKEA sliding doors she really liked. (he wasn't happy about that as he made much nicer doors, but it was what she wanted, and it does actually look good!) ... Worked out much cheaper than buying everything from IKEA or any of the bigger names.1

Avoid Hammonds like the plague. Overpriced and poor workmanship. Our sliding wardrobes were not aligned, had scratches, bullet holes and really slap dash. And its not 'made to measure despite what they say, they use standard size parts and fill in the gaps. Use outsourced fitters which vary in quality. Definitely not worth the overpriced ticket.2

So much to read, so little time.0 -
Oh absolutely not, I don't want to go with them. i've now got a sharps design visit booked in too. I'll see what the quotes come to but I would much rather have someone local do the job. I just didn't like what I saw on that instagram which made me feel like maybe this carpenter wouldn't really get my style. I will try to see if I can get someone to come give me a quote from a comparison website. My friends don't seem to know carpenters as not many own where they liveDoozergirl said:Carpentry is a skill. Producing something sleek is even easier than a detailed product like the ones you were looking at. They'd have no problem doing it, it's just that they're marketing something a bit more complicated. They might even be able to suggest someone to fit your Ikea stuff, if that's what you want.It reads like you're putting up barriers here to convince yourself to go with Hammonds 😕

If that is the instagram for Beeline, i don't think he keeps it very up to date to be honest with you. I know that he actually prefers to do more modern work, as we're having an old fashioned front door made and he was quite honest about the fact he preferred to make more modern doors, as that was more to his taste - but he can obviously do anything!
You'll probably find the same with most carpenters anyway, unless it is what i would say a 'younger' company, they may not have much online to look at and get their work by recommendation instead.
I have a feeling you can also pay Ikea to build their furniture for you, by the way...!1 -
We have just had a handyman do some work for us using pax wardrobes. We used 2 x100 and a 50 cm. Husband put them together, then handyman built a false wall and plastered it. The wardrobes were secured to the wall, more plasterboard at the top of the wardrobes and side and painted to match the bedroom. Then the skirting went around the bottom as well as around the false wall. They look really good. Handy man cost £300 and materials £42. ( he also did the plastering and painting) ikea plus delivery was £548.2

IKEA are sold out of PAX
I asked a local carpenter for a quote for a fitted wardrobe and he has quoted £2800. I suspect this makes sharps etc cheaper. It is not a difficult space or anything like that, just a 250cm wardrobe.0 -
Doozergirl said:It will be cheaper than Hammonds by a mile. Ikea offer fantastic storage options and there's nothing bespoke about Hammonds, despite their pricing being the same as genuine bespoke.
