As stated, IMC will take around 100hrs of work. CFA should take around 2 years to complete. A possible combination could be IMC plus Level 1 of the CFA. This should take around 9months. Remember that CFa has two exam sittings a year.

I'm guessing you're looking into Asset/Fund Management roles?
Maybe try temping first whilst studying. Any sort of banking/finance experience will go a long way.

I will be taking my IMC before the structural changes to the exam in Sept. While I have the knowledge, is there other exams that would be similar standard but beneficial, such as the FSA one by SII? I would imagine 75% is shared between the two exams.
  • Hi guys,

Just wondering what the approximate waiting time was between booking and sitting the exam?

I saw that you have to register and pay in order to see what dates are available but just wanted to get some kind of order when I would have to register in order to sit the exam in around two months?

    Cheers

    hey

I am afraid this is not entirely correct. The CFA will take at least 2.5 years to complete because there is only one exam per year for level 2 and level 3. The fastest way to do it is taking level 1 in Dec, level 2 to in June the following year and level 3 the year after. However, this is very tough, especially if you are working full time. I highly recommend Stalla or Schweser for summaries of the CFA Institute books. There are plenty of forums that discuss the best strategies for doing the CFA and I would not recommend signing up for the CFA exam without some proper thought and planning, especially if you are working whilst studying.

If you want to get into asset management I would recommend the IMC or just Level 1 of the CFA (lots of people just do level 1 to cover the ethics/ to show they go the extra mile / to realise it is a dreadful experience). The IMC does the same thing, it shows the prospective employer that you are committed and puts you in a good position with the FSA. From a technical perspective the IMC does not add an awful lot beyond what you would learn within the 1st month on the job.

The IMC is a good preparation for CFA level 1, but it can be done without.

I would recommend 7city for CFA preparation and colleagues of mine recommend 7city for the IMC too.
  • I've just started the distance-learning IMC with BPP Financial. The study notes reckon it takes around 100 hours of study. Of course, this dependes on how much effort you put in to those 100 hours.
I have no background in finance and am finding some of the terminology a bit tough going. I reckon that after immersing myself in it, then it'll become clearer. Kind of like learning the basics of a foreign language. If Fabio can do it...

Can anyone let me know how fluid the industry is? Is it possible to move between jobs and firms quite easily?

I used 7city for mine. They were alright, but the 3/4 day courses they do are pretty good and the materials they provided were key (example questions).
