Can I leave penalty free?

I have until recently ( Thursday 24th September 2020) had a broadband and BT sport contract with BT. I renewed my broadband contract in May of this year. This contract was for two years. Upon receiving the dreaded letter from BT this week informing me of a £4 per month increase on my BT sport I decided to cancel the Sport part of my contract. True to form BT then reduced my monthly repayment from £51 to £36 per month after the sport cancellation, however they then informed me that a new two year contract had been started due to the change of my existing contract.
Because this is now a new contract, do I have 14 days to pull out of this contract penalty free?
Thank you
Dave Price

That sounds odd. Possibly things have become muddled? If the broadband and sport and joined then you should have been able to cancel both, if separate you should have been able to cancel one without affecting the other? Or is it just that you asked for the wrong thing? Or did the contract in may pre warn you of the price rise?
You might try the BT forums and see if they can explain things.
Ultimately it sounds like you have to phone them and find out what is going on. Make it clear that you did not want to start a new contract and that no one told you it would start a new contract, which I assume is right, or did you agree to start a new contract when cancelling sport in return for a cheaper price? See if they can explain what is going on. If you are unhappy and feel you have been tricked then you can make a complaint and then go to the ombudsman. Always better to be polite and positive first and see if you can sort things out.

Suggests you should have been able to just cancel the tv bit without penalty. Unless you actively agreed something else? Some people wonder if they pushed it if they should really have been able to leave the whole deal but no one seems to have won teh point yet.1
