Some years ago my daughter rented a cottage with a system like this on an Economy 10 tariff. Although it has the potential to be very expensive, once you know what you are dealing with it is possible to economise. My daughter's landlord was very helpful and co-operative, showed her the billings of the previous tenant and so on. After a couple of years he expressed surprise at how much lower the bills were with the way I had configured the thing, and the way she used it, compared to the previous tenant.0

i dont see how you can say it wont help when hes paying double the other flats in his block despite not even using the heating. Ive so far in 2 calls had the debt reduced by £300.We are investigating the high usage And how its occurring and spark have even agreed to use to use a average of 3 months with the new meter to recalculate the entire bill from day one providing its not stupid high like it currently is. Just hope we can find out what is using it. As even with the reduction its pretty excessive
jbuchanangb - do you have any tips. Im making the 70 mile trip next weekend (Providing none of us go in lockdown) to look at it all and try help him work out whats going on and come up with a plan to live with economy 7. My first plan is getting a user manual for the boiler so i can see if hes even using it the best way0 -
I do hope you will be able to help your brother. I didn't say having a Smart meter and changing supplier won't help but that it won't solve the problem. The Smart meter will rule out estimated bills (but I would recommend your brother still reads his meter ) ; changing supplier will reduce his bills.
Look at temperature settings on the boiler and on the thermostats in the rooms, particularly don't heat rooms he doesn't use.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Have you done the sanity checks on the meter, as previously described? You need to make sure that it hasn't gone rogue (unlikely but not impossible) and that it's registering only his own consumption and not that of another flat or the communal areas.0

Your initial rebate is due to the confusion over opening reads. Nothing to do with ongoing usage. The facts remains that an electric wet CH system is always going to be an expensive option. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
