Do retail & bar staff behind screens need to wear masks?

Options
Government website says "From 24 September, it will be compulsory for retail, leisure and hospitality staff to wear a face covering in areas that are open to the public and where they come or are likely to come within close contact of a member of the public."

If staff are behind Perspex screens does this mean they are not within close contact of members of the public and therefore do not need to wear masks?

  • If you're behind a perspex screen I would say that area isn't open to the public but if your employer asks you to that would be a reasonable instruction.
  • Just been in my local Sainsburys and checkout staff were not wearing them.

As you have a perspex divider then that's ok.
As soon as you move from behind it, you must wear a mask

The rules say FACE COVERING, which could include a visor, not necessarily a mask

i think people accept that the term "mask" includes mask and face coverings
If you want to be pedantic -  a face covering should cover the whole face then otherwise it would be called a mouth and nose covering
  • The guidance also goes on to say:

Please check sector specific guidance to see if this applies to you. Businesses are also subject to legal obligations to protect their staff under existing legislation. This includes taking appropriate steps to provide a safe working environment, which may include providing face coverings where appropriate, alongside other mitigation such as Perspex screens to separate workers from the public.”

So to me it is saying Perspex screens should be additional and therefore regardless you should still be wearing a face covering.

The customer will be wearing one from their side of the screen, I don’t see why staff members shouldn’t be on their side either.

Obviously exceptions do allow for not wearing one which can also be found in the guidance.
