What to do with an old car?

Hello all. I have ordered a brand new car for the first time, and I’m unsure what to do with my current one.

It’s a 2004 Nissan Micra SE, which my Nan gave me in 2013. It runs well but it’s got 110k miles on the clock, various bumps and scrapes and bits of interior trim missing.

Mid-October, two weeks before my new car arrives, I’ll have to service and MOT this one. It won’t pass (the bonnet cable has gone, it needs new wiper blades etc... that’s going to cost me around £450.

WeBuyAnyCar.com (who my friends have called “car thieves”) say £500 online without seeing it, I reckon it’ll be a lot less.

This car isn’t ideal but it’ll run to 200k miles or more as a cheap runaround.

Any ideas anyone?

Stick it on eBay for 99p and list the problems. Someone will take it away for you and either put it back on the road or break it for parts.

Don't put anything that is just your view in the listing, like

Given that is 90k miles from now, why aren't you paying the £450 to get the car fixed up and saving the money of the new car?  No guarantee new car will last as long.

I used WeBuyAnyCar.com through TopCashBack, would recommend but it looks like the Cash back has finished

Webuyanycar was the best answer for me Good Luck.

Apart from Philip Schofield, that is the first positive comment I've heard about WBAC.

Hi I appreciate some people don't like WBAC  but for me it worked, my Garage Toyota offered me less than half WBAC and it was all done and dusted immediately, no waiting for comeback from selling private.
Although it looks like TopCashBack have finished their cashback I received £62 ( at the end piece of mind )

How much does the OP think a 16 year old Micra with 110k miles is actually worth?
£500 seems pretty good to me.

Besides, I’m surprised the OP is that concerned about the value of a car they were given In the first place especially as they have just bought a brand new car, which will likely lose many thousands as soon as it’s driven off the forecourt ;)

If it’s value-for-money motoring they’re after then keep the ‘good for 200k miles’ Micra - after all, it’s not going to depreciate much in value ;)

I was in a similar position when I rang a local breaker to come get my old Golf at the end of February, albeit I already had it's replacement on the driveway. I knew the Golf needed an amount of work doing which was significant compared to the value of the car and I didn't want the hassle of selling it privately. I reckon I got £300 less than market value, but I figured it owed me nothing, and I was glad it was dealt with during a stressful period for us - and that was before Covid-19 really kicked off!

In the future, I would be more inclined to trade a car in for the convenience. We were still undecided about owning 1 vs 2 cars when we bought the new car, and I'm not sure I would've gotten much for the Golf against a 5yo car anyway.

The Golf is showing as taxed and MOT'd; I hope it's running well for somebody.

List it on eBay or sell on Gumtree. List in honestly with low starting bid and someone will buy. WBAC will not give you £500 for a banger that needs £450 spent to put it back on the road for another year. They were only offering me about £400 for my 2008 207 last year that had a full MOT.
