It doesnt matter that it was £950, it should still be in a useable condition as a car. I think the OP is within his/her rights to a refund as the fault was obviously present at time of sale.
BTW £300 was a very good quote for a head gasket; typical garage cost can easily be double that.
A car with a slight oil leak is useable and roadworthy.
It needs to spew out so much oil that the environment is threatened* to fail the MOT, or cause a danger to other road users with the oil slick to be unroadworthy.

    *
    8.4.1. (a) Fluid:

    (i) leaking excessively and likely to harm the environment or to pose a safety risk to other road users = Major (ii) leaking continuously and likely to pose a serious risk to road safety = Dangerous

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

The test is a 75mm diameter pool within 5 minutes...

OP does say 'leaks excessively'; not 'slight'. So don't change the facts to make a point.

What constitutes "leaks excessively" is a personal opinion. The MOT standard is quantified.

I have Japanese cars. Even a single drip of oil under one of those  on my block paving would be "leaking excessively" and totally unacceptable.
I have owned 4 LandRovers, Buying EP90 by the gallon for the normal transmission leaks was perfectly acceptable. (And I doubt if any of them could have produced a 75mm dia pool in 5 minutes- that is leaking like a tap territory)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
