House alarm PIR fault

Options
Hello,
Not sure if anyone can help with this techie Q, but...
When setting the house alarm the alarm panel shows that one of the room sensors is sensing some movement (red light on the panel to show its activated). Looking into the room the actual PIR isn't showing as activated (no red light on it), but nevertheless the alarm panel thinks it is. I think a second one is starting to do this now (no room activation but showing as activated on the panel when).
Any idea (don't want to fork out £ if it's an easy fix).
Thanks

  • Are you sure the red light on the PIR would latch on if it had been activated. Some do, as it means you can then have several on the same circuit and know which one has been tripped, but it depends on configuration.

Otherwise it has either gone faulty or, less likely but possible, a cable has been damaged (eaten by mice? etc).

New wired PIR's are really quite cheap. You will need to put the panel into engineer mode to disable the tamper circuit before removing the cover on the PIR and replacing it. Normal six or eight wires (two for +ve and -ve 12 volts) two for the alarm circuit and two for the tamper circuit. If they latch there is normally a further two wires for this function.

Similar thing happened to me recently with a wireless set up and as above a change of battery fixed the problem.
  • Thanks all!
Yep, the red PIR light (on the PIR itself) comes on when you move in front of it. Still does that (on or off depending on this movement, i.e. not solid red) but on the panel (which has a row of red lights 1.2.3.4) no. 3* (PIR in question) is solid on (not all the time, just when we go out and try to set it).
Heard the battery option before - where would that be (in the main panel?)
The main 'box' (with a screwed on panel - sorry, not a techie) is in the cellar but the actual alarm panel to set it is by the front door. No idea how to enter engineer mode.
*Btw, just tried to set it again and no.4 now also appears to be solid on, on the panel, but that PIR also appears to be working ok when you walk in front of it. Hm?

  • G4 Accenta, btw

Is this a wired system or wireless? If wireless then there will be an easily replaceable battery in each PIR. If it is wired then refer to my earlier reply. There will be a default engineer code for the panel which a Google search will establish. However it may have been changed to whatever engineer code any previous maintenance company uses. That then gets a bit more complicated!

    Thanks,
Funny how a second PIR now seems to playing up??

OK, then it is likely to be wired in the way I have described. However you will need engineer mode and a little bit of confidence with low voltage electrics. Nice and safe but don't short +ve and -ve together or you will blow a fuse in the panel! Just turning the mains off doesn't help as the panel will have a 12 volt backup battery. Disconnecting that battery will cause the outside sounder to go off and so on!

If you are not comfortable having a go and don't know anybody with a bit of electrical knowledge the look for a local independent alarm maintenance company. By the time they charge for a call out and a couple of PIRs (maybe) you are probably looking at a hundred quid. The PIRs will maybe cost you c. £15 each on Amazon or eBay.

OK, many thanks for your advice. Appreciated.
