I wonder how much it would have cost to just take it to a jeweller and get it done here? Probably a lot less that this rather convoluted way of doing it is now going to cost.  It appears to have been the friend who made the mistake here. Any chance they might pay for the mess up out of loyalty?

Quite. Perhaps they should have predicted the COVID pandemic and not let their trusted friend take care of things for them?

Irrelevant. The paperwork was filed incorrectly by the friend, hence why it was stopped. In this instance i would have expected the friend to be a little more instrumental in resolving the issues their mistake has caused. I'm still curious what it would have cost to have just got the work done here. It seems extravagance may have proved a downfall here. Personally i wouldn't have even contemplated allowing something this precious & sentimental to be sent across the world for a few material changes just to save a few quid for something i could have had done here but may have had to pay a little more for. My guess is it would have been much cheaper financially & emotionally than the current situation.
  • A 1ct (nevermind 2ct) diamond ring is not above your normal household contents insurance individual item value?
The original 1ct wasn’t so expensive when purchased 25 yrs ago compared to today’s prices so on our policy it wasn’t needed to be listed separately. Had we got the 2ct yes that would have been.

We would have saved approx £1500-£2000 by our friend doing it for cost. They are devastated at what happened I’m sure would contribute to new one or have one made that we contribute to.

    Emotionally definitely right in hindsight.
But the ring was never suppose to be posted. We passed it to his hand and after 17yrs of friendship trust is good. We were due to meet up 2 months later but then Covid struck and we couldn’t, then he was due to come here to uk last month which also got cancelled and with no travel plans able to be confirmed for the foreseeable and 6 months without my beloved ring we thought paying for secure post with insurance was the best option (of course not insured against customs seizure) and with us not being savvy of border rules which both our fault but just never envisaged this to happen.

    Thank you 🙏
  • Just to say thank you everyone for their comments and advice.
of course in hindsight which is a good thing, we would have had the upgrade done locally but our friend of 17 yrs is trusted to us and this was all arranged pre Covid19 breakout and should have all been done within 2 months and no posting involved. We see each other at least twice a year normally and it would have been handed back to me personally as it was to him. Covid stopped us meeting up now on 2 occasions both in Dubai and here.
Yes should have done things differently and I have learnt a very hard and emotional lesson.
