Some one has been using my bank card

Options
I found out today someone has been using my bank card at shops local to me. I have contacted the bank and they have blocked the card and I was put through to the fraud department. How long will it take for them to sort it out I don't have much money on the card and its now overdrawn by £20.

Any help

If you did not authorise a particular payment you can claim a refund.

In most cases the bank must refund the payment without undue delay and by the end of the business day following the day on which it became aware of the problem, unless it has reasonable grounds for suspecting that you have acted fraudulently.

Your bank may ask you to answer some questions and fill out a form confirming what has happened, but it cannot delay your refund while it waits for you to return the form.

  • Are they contactless or using a PIN?
Local to you will suggest it is someone close to you - not nice but could be a family member or friend.
You don't say how much has been taken - the bank might ask you to report the fraud to the police.

Do you still have the card or have you lost it?

I had the card this morning when I went down town It was in my jacket and when I got back from the school run it wasn't there. I must have lost it in town or on the school run the first shop it was used is 2 minutes away from the school then at 3.17pm 29.79 was spent in asda a 10 minute walk from that shop. The first was 18.19p when I got home and realised I didn't have it I transferred most of the money off to another bank because the app for santander doesn't let you cancel cards on it. It said I would have to ring while I was waiting to get through another transaction went from asda.
It probably my fault for losing the card.

So they must be contactless transactions.
You did not say the card was lost - so probably not a family member or friend but a chancer who knew that they could try their luck up to £45.
    The bank will refund you.

Or, given the £29.79 in Asda, a chancer who doesn't know the contactless limit has been increased to £45!

Call the bank explain the situation. Will get passed to fraud team who will get you refunded.
    No arguments on contactless payments.

The 29.79 made me go overdrawn by 19 pounds and I managed to get some money on to the bank to cover my direct debits coming out and to make sure its not overdrawn now. But I haven't heard any thing back from the bank how long will it take. Can the bank find out what was got from these shops. They did ask if I shopped at these shop and I use asda alot but the corner shop never been in there.

    Thank you

Or that Asda will have CCTV.

The bank won't devote any effort to investigating specifically who used the card or how/when/where - their sole angle is whether or not they're responsible for refunding, i.e. whether you can be held liable.  Provided you haven't been negligent with the card and reported its loss promptly to them, then they should refund in accordance with the FCA-imposed timescale as linked above, so if they haven't done this yet then you can chase them.
