And did dell not replace all the motherboards of the machines affected?

If you're running gx240s these days you probably deserve what you get.

Any of the blue chip companies i've worked for have had dell kit amongst others.

Not getting into the 'my company was bigger than your company' as a basis for who knows more about dells debate, just to save you and me time -

'I think Dell machines are good'
    'oh no they're not'
    'oh yes they are'
    'oh no they're not'
    .... repeat until you're bored.

lol they did replace the boards but ran out as we had about 15,000 machines affected :rotfl:

not getting into a debate i am only telling the truth , dell have constant failures with there corporate systems,i have played around with some of there server stuff which was quite disturbing :rotfl: not sure about the home use stuff.

Why keep away from Celeron processors whats wrong with them?

Also been looking at the dell website to which map200uk recommended the vostro 1000, when going through the list of the options to build my dell laptop would you change any of the specs they choose

also looking for one for my daughter who is 18, mainly for surfing the net, storing music, pictures ect,

    Thanks
morning, the problem with them is, they are and always have been the budget poor mans Pentium...(also an intel cpu), whilst the new celerons are better than the previous ones-first generation were awful, i would still not recommend a celeron laptop, on the basis that the celeron laptops seem hugely overpriced considering..they are using a celeron cpu

look around and you will see celeron laptops for not much less (mayb 10-15) than a core 2 duo / amd turion 64 x2 based laptop-sometimes even more expensive..

you can pickup a budget laptop 300-400 with a turion/core 2 duo cpu-yet some places still charge this for a celeron one?

    hope this helps

With entry level laptops pretty much the same price as entry level pcs, people are buying laptops for a variety of reasons.

    (a) they dont need a dedicated room / space in a house for it
    (b) they can be used at the kitchen table for homeworks, in the living room, or in a bedroom
    (c) they can appear less daunting and more fun to a child than a pc system

I think laptops outsold PC systems 10 to 1 last year when we had the retail unit.
Yeah I can see that, but what on earth does a 10yr old want a laptop for? Using for games - get them a DS, On the internet - No thanks not unless you are the same room as me & on my pc - Work (School) - She is only 10. her whole work life is likely to involve computers & schools do not set work that needs to be done on a pc. Child needs to learn about using pc's - Don't worry they will.

I'm sorry I don't want to appear rude to the other ops but to me it is utterly bizzare to get such a young child such a tool. It is not a toy.
Much better off spending the 400 towards a school ski trip or similar.

My concern would be that a child could use a laptop out of the supervision area of an adult. Any young person using a computer should not be doing so in the confines of their room and it is much better for them to use it where they are overlooked at all times.

I totally second all that Wakandem says, a 10 year old does not need a laptop ! If you buy her one, she is going to let her mates play on it, drop it, leave it on the bus, forget to close the lid before taking it into the shower... The list goes on and on. Think seriously before committing.
