Laptop for Daughter ????

I wonder if anybody can help me.I am after a laptop for my 10 year old daughter. I am not the best with all the technical information. I am after spending upto £400. All she will be using it for will be homework, storing songs and pictures and going on the web. Has anybody got any ideas on what is the best I can get for my money. I have had a look at a few but really not sure what is best these days.

Ive seen the Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5535 Laptop Intel Celeron 530 1.73GHz 1024MB 120GB 15.4" DVD- on ebuyer for £350, is this any good???

Any advice appreciated

Avoid anything with the word Celeron in its processor type.

Check out www.dmxdimension.com for Dell deals - look at the Vostro 1000. Aim for the one at £353 or the one at £385 or thereabouts

Celeron is a very very slow processor.

You can buy each of your daughter an Asus Eee PC 701. It costs £219 (Including VAT). Asus is selling one, every 6 seconds, so you can imagine how popular it really is.

    Here are the detailed Specifications:

    Model Name:
    Eee PC 4G

    Colour:
    Black

    RAM:
    512 MB (DDR2)

    Solid State Disk:
    4G

    Display:
    7 inch TFT

    Audio:
    Hi-Definition audio
    Stereo speaker
    Microphone
    Battery:
    4 Cells: 5200 mAh, 3.5hrs*
    * Actual battery life will depend on actual operations and other settings.

    Weight
    0.92 kg

    Operating System:
    Linux
    Windows XP compatible

It is capable of doing all the tasks that you have mentioned in your message plus much more. It's being loved for its versatility, small size and light weight. Although it is designed for children, but it is in demand by adults too cuz it's an excellent additional PC and a PDA replacement.

It is out of stock everywhere at the moment, but merchants and resellers have ordered new stock. Technoworld will be getting new stock this week and the next week, but the item is on hot demand and is usually sold out the moment it reaches the selllers, so watch out. It's Christmas discount code at technoworld is X-MAS112.

    Cheers.

Dell are the largest builders of computers in the world. Therefore there are likely to be more problems reported as there are more of them. Also their support sometimes defaults to india at certain hours.

I've worked with Dell machines for years - i managed a network of around 1000 of them until recently there - no significant issues.

Personally i'd avoid anything with a 7 inch screen for doing homeworks etc on.

look at dmxdimension for the vostro 1000, make sure it has at least the TK55 processor, 1gb RAM min, and get the upgraded battery. If your budget will stretch to the TK60 with 2Gb then great.

Thanks pgilc1 for that. What do you think about the specification of the vostro 1000. The only thing that concerens my daughter is weight and the thickness of the laptop. Do you think this one will be o.k ???
