waste disposal

Hi all hope all's well.
Iam having a problem with my kitchen sink waste we have a waste disposal which has been working fine for many years. In the last 6 months the waste from the sink keeps getting blocked when using waste disposal. Is it possible that the waste disposal is not grinding the food up small enough. As I said it used to be fine and nothing has changed.

  • 1. Make sure that when it blocks you clear the waste pipe right through to the end, probably under the grating over the gully.
    2. If you grind things with fine skins, like onions, they block more readily.
    3. The waste disposal unit won't last forever.  If its more than 8 to 10 years old I'd start thinking about a replacement.

Our local council collect food waste for composting & recycling - There shouldn't be any need for a waste disposal unit..
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

  • When using a waste disposal unit, what happens to the minced up food?
Does it simply get flushed down drain? If so, surely this can't be good for the sewerage system due to the problems of "fatbergs" becoming more and more common.

But not all do - ours don't. And we have no use for compost so can't dispose of it that way.

Mine used to, invested a lot of money in special vehicles  and bins and then scrapped it.

It is a shame that some councils don't have a composting scheme... This site might help you (and others) to hook up with a local community project that will compost food waste - https://www.farmgarden.org.uk/community-compost
Failing that, local allotments might provide an answer.

Thank you, I will look in to that.

Hi yes when it gets blocked I clean the drain completely
Do waste disposal become less affective? ie not chop up as well, as they get older.

Yes. The blades or what ever is used to grind up the waste will get blunt and wear. So eventually, they are less effective at grinding stuff.

  • My thinking (probably wrong) that if the food was chopped up small enough to get through the waste disposal it must be working properly. All the food leaves the waste disposal and just get caught in the waste pipe.
