    Something rings wrong here

A lightening strike would not end up in you paying for the repair under any circumstances. It would be repaired , for free, by openreach.

Openreach can , for operational reasons, place a pole wherever they like but under no circumstances would they block a drive .

How do you know that they cannot block a drive?

That's nothing to do with BT - as I thought its your equipment that you've paid for not the pole.

If you have a proper dropped kerb then they shouldn't have put a pole up that blocks the dropped kerb, contact your council.
If you don't have a dropped kerb for correct access then not a lot you can do.
If the lightning damage came down the phoneline, then Openreach should fix it and not charge you. If the lightning damage came down the electrical power line then you need to pay. What did you pay for, a new router, the cable repairs? Paying for the router seems reasonable, paying for phone line repairs doesn't.
  • A pole of some type must have been there for years otherwise how else were you and all the other houses receiving a telephone service before?
  • Must nip out and buy some more tin foil.
