With the car up on a ramp it is entirely possible to assess the state of the discs just by looking at the inside face of the disc which tend to suffer heavier wear. Cars with alloys with wide spaced spokes allow you to assess the discs just by looking through the wheel. I suspect they were just humouring your oh to get rid of you. 

Maybe we should try bit of humour too.

I have used clickmechanic a few times, you see the price upfront, and you get the contact details of the garage before the work. Not had any issues with them
