How to siphon petrol

My car is soon going to be traded in but I only filled it up the other day and am unlikely to use a full tank between now and when I take it in (next few weeks). How can I safely siphon off the petrol? I've never done this before and don't really a fancy explaining to my colleagues in A+E how I have a mouth full of petrol!

  • First you'll need to get past the anti siphon device. If you use a clear tube you'll see the petrol come into the top of the tube. Once it's past the highest point gravity will do the rest.

The majority of cars now have anti syphon devices fitted in the filler neck to make it very difficult.

How much hassle do you really want to go to for, what, £40-worth...?

Out of interest how do you get past the anti-siphon device? I failed last time I tried.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I wouldn;t bother. its more hassle than its worth, and potentially dangerous.

Anti-siphon? Seems like it is too much effort.
Many thanks for the replies. I'll just drive in "sport" mode for a few days and that'll probably use it up!
  • We couldn't siphon on my 15 year old car we were scrapping. We ended up getting through to the fuel line through the interior of the car, obviously not much help when you're trading in though...

Shouldnt get any in your mouth, I have done it dozens of times in the past without tasting it, last time was in the early 80s though so no help to the OP
  • What a tightwad! When I sold my car privately last year I filled it up with petrol the day before as a friendly gesture to the new owner.
