I've just put a deposit down on a mini and the dealer is trying extremely hard to get me to take their finance, rather than the loan we've been approved for at 2.9%. They've adjusted all their figures to be £80 more expensive in total than my bank loan, with a scratch and dent policy included for 3yrs. ( £260  normally a year apparently)

I don't particularly want this policy, I'd rather keep my £80. However has anyone any experience of this type of policy? They cover small scratches and dents, with a £150 excess. The car is 2yrs old and immaculate.

Any thoughts or experience with this type of policy?  It's completely new to me.

You probably can get most small scratches and dents repaired for less than £150 so if that's the excess for each claim then I'd say it definitely isn't worth it.

£80 per year for three years. £150 excess.

Make one claim, it'll need to be at least £150 + (3 x £80) = £390 for the policy to save you money.
Make one claim a year, they'll each need to be at least £150 + £80 = £230 for the policy to save you money.
Make four claims a year, they'll each need to be £150 + (£80/4) = £170 for the policy to save you money. But I'll bet the insurer will blacklist you for claiming that often.

How much have you spent on scratches and dings in the last three years...?
  • When you put it like that, it's as clear as day..

    Ps. I've spent Absolutely nothing!!

Precisely why "fear" is a great marketing tool.

"What if..." the salesman's favourite words.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

These types of insurance, what I call minior insurance, EG boiler cover, white goods cover, tyre cover, dents cover - when you renew or take out a new insurance policy, does that count as a claim if you claim for  dent, puncted tyre etc?
    TIA

Probably but I tried being nice and they weren't extra nice in return. So the signature is about as accurate as the collection of cars.
