What are the current workplace rules re masks

Options
I start a new job this week and am unsure what the workplace requirements are.

Is it a requirement to wear masks when in the same room as others (with or without distancing)?  If so I'm going to need to buy more masks . .

  • You need to ask as each workplace is different. We could say one thing on here but your employer could say something completely different. So just ask them.

    Ask your workplace.
Each workplace needs to do their own risk assessment and work out what measures are needed and relevant to their set-up. Some places put in perspex screens, some cut down the number of people in a room, some places ask everyone to wear masks, other places provide face shields for customer facing roles.

No one on this forum will know what your workplaces risk assessment says.
  • There are no rules that say people in an office have to wear one, other than in NHS settings.

If any boss is making their staff wear one that is something you will have yo ask about.
  • If your job is to be a character actor for Disneyland you may need to wear a mask.

If the workplaces risk-assessment has concluded that staff need masks then those masks (like any other PPE that was required before Covid) should be provided by the employer
  • What got said /seen at interview? I saw one ad though it was a while back which said the successful applicant would have to agree to take their temperature before starting a day's work so you are best and right to ask. I'm waiting for some clever so and so to design a mask for call centre/call handler type personnel. Till then it is just no sharing of headset and attempt to keep the distance.

Each employer is going to be different.

My advice, buy some reuseable masks, at least you can wash them, Ive tried the disposables and they irritate me so I prefer reuseables.
  • You employer will have to provide masks if they are needed.
  • All these disposable masks will be doing so much damage to the environment.  Archaeologists of the future will be able to use the layer of PPE to date fossils etc to 2020.

    Hi
Call them and ask but the bottom line, the employer has the responsibility to keep everyone safe. Should you feel they are not, first tell them if no action report them.
